Several large solar power projects are underway or have recently been completed in Africa, contributing to the continent's renewable energy transition. These projects include the 100MW Chisamba Solar PV Project in Zambia, the largest in sub-Saharan Africa excluding South Africa, and the 189 MW Biopio Solar Power Station in Angola. Additionally, Algeria's Tafouk 1 Mega Solar Project, a multi-phase initiative, aims to produce 4 GW of clean energy. Other significant projects are located in countries like Egypt, Senegal, and Togo.
Chisamba Solar PV Project (Zambia):
This 100MW project is the largest solar development in Zambia and sub-Saharan Africa outside of South Africa. It is financed through a combination of debt (70% from Stanbic Bank) and equity (30%).
Biopio Solar Power Station (Angola):
This 189 MW plant, operational since October 2022, was developed by a consortium. It's part of a larger project that includes multiple solar farms with over a million solar panels.
Tafouk 1 Mega Solar Project (Algeria):
This $3.6 billion project is a multi-phase initiative aiming to produce 4 GW of clean energy, significantly boosting Algeria's renewable capacity.
Diass Solar Power Plant (Senegal):
This 23 MW plant, located 40 km southeast of Dakar, was inaugurated in 2022 and supplies electricity to 33,000 households.
Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed power plant (Togo):
This 50 MW plant, utilizing solar tracker technology, is the largest solar photovoltaic plant in the sub-region and is part of Togo's push for universal access to electricity.
Aswan solar power plants (Egypt):
Dubai-based AMEA Power commissioned a 500 MW solar plant in Aswan in December 2024, and has plans for a second 1,000 MW plant with a 600 MWh battery energy storage system.
Angola Southern Provinces Project:
This project includes 724 MW of utility-scale solar PV, solar minigrids with battery storage, home power kits, and potable water in four southern provinces of Angola.
