UNLAWFUL ASSEMBLY AT NATIONAL HEROES’ STADIUM IN LUSAKA
October 9, 2026 – The Zambia Police Service has recorded an incident of unlawful assembly at National Heroes’ Stadium in Lusaka, where a crowd gathered following disinformation circulated on social media suggesting that money would be distributed at the stadium.
On October 9, 2026, around 07:30 hours, Matero Police Station received a report that a large crowd had gathered at Gate One of National Heroes’ Stadium. Police officers responded and confirmed that a crowd was present at the scene.
Police officers apprehended eleven (11) suspects in connection with the incident.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the gathering followed a deceptive social media post by an online commentator encouraging members of the public to go to National Heroes’ Stadium, claiming that money would be distributed. The post reportedly led some members of the public to believe that they would each receive cash.
Police officers engaged with the crowd and advised those present to disperse peacefully. When the crowd did not comply, officers dispersed it to maintain public order and ensure public safety.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing, and further updates will be provided as necessary.
The Zambia Police Service urges members of the public to be cautious of disinformation shared on social media, particularly messages promising money or other benefits. Members of the public are advised to verify such information through established authorities before acting on it.
The situation at National Heroes’ Stadium remains calm, and police officers continue to monitor the area.
