CRUDA COMMENDS PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA FOR ASSENTING TO EDUCATION (AMENDMENT) ACT, 2026
The Copperbelt Rural Development Association (CRuDA) warmly commends President Hakainde Hichilema for assenting to the Education (Amendment) Act, 2026, a landmark piece of legislation that secures free education as a legal right.
This historic Act represents a significant milestone in the country's quest to provide equitable access to education for all citizens, regardless of their social or economic background. By guaranteeing free education from Early Childhood Care, Development and Education (ECCDE) through secondary school in public institutions, the Government has demonstrated its commitment to investing in Zambia's future.
For many families in rural communities, access to education has long been hindered by poverty and the inability to afford school fees and other educational costs. Countless children, despite possessing the desire and potential to learn, have been forced to stay away from school due to financial constraints faced by their parents and guardians. The Education (Amendment) Act, 2026, offers renewed hope to these families by removing one of the greatest barriers to education.
The impact of this legislation will be far-reaching. It will increase school enrolment, reduce dropout rates, improve literacy levels, and create greater opportunities for children in rural areas to achieve their dreams. Most importantly, it will empower future generations with the knowledge and skills required to contribute meaningfully to national development.
Education remains one of the most powerful tools for advancing development in any community. In rural areas particularly, education plays a critical role in breaking the cycle of poverty, improving livelihoods, enhancing health outcomes, promoting innovation, and fostering responsible citizenship. Communities with educated populations are better positioned to attract investment, embrace modern agricultural practices, participate in economic activities, and effectively address local development challenges.
CRuDA firmly believes that sustainable rural development cannot be achieved without a strong educational foundation. By safeguarding free education through legislation, the Government has taken a bold and progressive step towards ensuring that no child is denied an education because of poverty.
We therefore applaud President Hakainde Hichilema and his administration for this visionary achievement. Such a selfless act demonstrates good leadership, compassion, and a genuine commitment to improving the lives of ordinary Zambians. It reflects a leadership that recognizes education not merely as a service, but as a fundamental right and a critical investment in the nation's future.
CRuDA remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote education, community empowerment, and sustainable rural development throughout Zambia.
