CRUDA COMMENDS PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA FOR ASSENTING TO EDUCATION (AMENDMENT) ACT, 2026

The Copperbelt Rural Development Association (CRuDA) warmly commends President Hakainde Hichilema for assenting to the Education (Amendment) Act, 2026, a landmark piece of legislation that secures free education as a legal right.

This historic Act represents a significant milestone in the country's quest to provide equitable access to education for all citizens, regardless of their social or economic background. By guaranteeing free education from Early Childhood Care, Development and Education (ECCDE) through secondary school in public institutions, the Government has demonstrated its commitment to investing in Zambia's future.

For many families in rural communities, access to education has long been hindered by poverty and the inability to afford school fees and other educational costs. Countless children, despite possessing the desire and potential to learn, have been forced to stay away from school due to financial constraints faced by their parents and guardians. The Education (Amendment) Act, 2026, offers renewed hope to these families by removing one of the greatest barriers to education.

The impact of this legislation will be far-reaching. It will increase school enrolment, reduce dropout rates, improve literacy levels, and create greater opportunities for children in rural areas to achieve their dreams. Most importantly, it will empower future generations with the knowledge and skills required to contribute meaningfully to national development.

Education remains one of the most powerful tools for advancing development in any community. In rural areas particularly, education plays a critical role in breaking the cycle of poverty, improving livelihoods, enhancing health outcomes, promoting innovation, and fostering responsible citizenship. Communities with educated populations are better positioned to attract investment, embrace modern agricultural practices, participate in economic activities, and effectively address local development challenges.

CRuDA firmly believes that sustainable rural development cannot be achieved without a strong educational foundation. By safeguarding free education through legislation, the Government has taken a bold and progressive step towards ensuring that no child is denied an education because of poverty.

We therefore applaud President Hakainde Hichilema and his administration for this visionary achievement. Such a selfless act demonstrates good leadership, compassion, and a genuine commitment to improving the lives of ordinary Zambians. It reflects a leadership that recognizes education not merely as a service, but as a fundamental right and a critical investment in the nation's future.

CRuDA remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote education, community empowerment, and sustainable rural development throughout Zambia.

Mpongwe DC engages chiefteness Malembeka to find ways to curb absenteeism at St Theresa's school

By Theresa Sanjilu

Enrollment at St. Theresa's primary school has jumped from 1,247 to 1,938 pupils, 948 boys and 990 girls due to the school feeding programme introduced by government. Attendance and performance has also improved since the program started.

This came to light when Mpongwe District Commissioner (DC) Mwambashi Mwitwa visited the school on Friday.

School Head Teacher Munalula Sililo said pupils are currently fed 3 times a week, with meals served daily during the first week of school opening to boost attendance.

He also revealed that the school still has no early Childhood teachers.

The head teacher flagged absenteeism during market days, harvest season, and lack of enough classrooms as some of the major challenges.

And Mwitwa said he will engage Chieftainess Malemba to discuss absenteeism and the need for more classroom space.

He said though the program is delivering results at St Theresa’s, more investment in infrastructure and staffing is needed to sustain the progress.

MPONGWE FARMERS HAIL BUMPER HARVEST, CALL FOR TIMELY PAYMENTS

Story by THERESA SANJILU

Farmers in Mpongwe District have expressed optimism following a bumper maize harvest for this farming season, while urging government to ensure prompt payments for delivered produce.

Ibenga Cooperative Chairperson Mary Musonda said this year’s maize harvest has significantly improved compared to the previous two farming seasons, describing the yield as encouraging for local farmers.

Musonda noted that farmers in the district had invested substantial resources and effort into maize production and now expect government to facilitate timely payments once maize is delivered to designated depots.

She further welcomed the national maize production projection of 4.9 million metric tonnes for the 2025/2026 farming season, stating that the figures reflect a strong recovery in Zambia’s agricultural sector.

Musonda said while the projected surplus is expected to support exports, strategic food reserves, and industrial use, farmers should not be disadvantaged through low producer prices.

Meanwhile, Lutanda Ward Development Committee Vice Chairperson Eunice Sakapita echoed similar sentiments, commending government for the timely distribution of fertilizer during the farming season.

However, Sakapita cautioned authorities against setting maize prices too low, stressing that farmers deserve fair compensation for their investment and hard work.

‎DISTRICT COMMISSIONER REVIEWS HOME GROWN SCHOOL FEEDING PROGRAMME IN MPONGWE

Story by THERESA SANJILU

Mpongwe District Commissioner Mwambashi Mwitwa has commended the positive impact of the Home Grown School Feeding Programme following an inspection tour of selected schools on 28 May 2026.

Speaking during visits to Agape Primary School and Mpongwe Central Primary School, Mwitwa reiterated government’s commitment to improving access to education through enhanced learner welfare initiatives.

The Home Grown School Feeding Programme, introduced under President Hakainde Hichilema, has been rolled out in primary schools nationwide to improve school attendance, learner concentration, and overall academic performance.

Mwitwa, accompanied by officials from the District Education Board Secretary (DEBS) and District Education Standards Office (DESO), assessed the programme’s implementation at both schools.

At Agape Primary School, with an enrollment of 479 pupils, SHN Coordinator Mudenda said learners are served nshima twice a week, with samp provided on other days as part of the feeding schedule.

At Mpongwe Central Primary School, which has 3,396 primary pupils, the programme has been extended to secondary learners due to the long distances some pupils travel from areas such as Nampamba. The school currently feeds at least 2,000 learners per week.

The growing number of beneficiaries has placed pressure on infrastructure and staffing. Mwitwa noted the urgent need to recruit additional food handlers and construct a proper kitchen and dining shelter to improve service delivery and efficiency.

Despite these challenges, head teachers from both schools expressed gratitude to President Hakainde Hichilema for the initiative. They described the programme as a significant intervention that has increased enrollment, improved attendance, and boosted learner participation in class.

Closing the tour, Mwitwa urged teachers and learners to fully utilise the programme as a tool for enhancing academic performance and promoting quality education in the district.
