WHAT IS CROP ROTATION❓❓

Crop rotation is the growing of a series of crops on the same piece of land in a planned sequence. Crop rotation can be done by either using the same piece of land but that is divided into pieces allocated for the growth of different crops selected in the rotation within a season; or one crop is grown on a different piece of land every season without following a specific order.

CROP ROTATION is important because of the following reasons:

1. It improves soil fertility through the inclusion of crop species that, fix N2 in the soil, explore different root zones, bring nutrients from lower levels, especially trees and shrubs and have extensive root systems which leave large amounts of organic matter in the soil.

2. Reduces crop failure.

3. Enhances w**d control- some w**ds have favorable associations with some crops and by growing crops which they do not associate with, you destroy the w**d- e.g. Straigaasiatica associates with maize in a negative way to the crop.

4. Helps control pests- especially those that are host-specific.

5. Helps control erosion e.g. Cynodondactylon has a good root system and ground cover that reduces erosion.

! Crops that belong to the same family should not follow in a sequence; deeper rooted crops should alternate with shallow rooted crops and always use a legume in the cycle. 💯

HEAT DETECTION IN PIGS 🐷

Heat period is a time when the female animal is receptive to the male. The heat after parturition takes place after 4-7 days after weaning. The heat period lasts for 48 hours and ovulation usually occurs 10- 12 hours or towards the end of the first day of heat. The eggs usually remain fertile up to 24 hours following ovulation. After this period, they begin to lose their ability to get fertilized by s***m.

SIGNS OF HEAT

✓ Restlessness.
✓ Swelling of the v***a.
✓ Slimy viscous discharge from the v***a.
✓ Frequent urination.
✓ Mounting of other animals or accepting to be mounted by other animals.
✓ Standing response when another animal tries to mount it.
✓ Loss of appetite.

VENTILATION

Ventilation has three functions. To control the temperature of the building, to remove unwanted moisture and obnoxious gases produced by the birds and any associated droplet infections.

Danger of respiratory diseases also mounts as birds grow as a result the broilers needs plenty of fresh clean air to breathe and so good ventilation will remove the stale gases built up from birds and braziers. Poor ventilation results into high mortality due to a build – up of carbon monoxide and ammonia.
