The Killers of Dreams
I was conducting interviews for a supervisory role and I asked the candidate, “What makes you a good candidate for this Job ? ” .Looking direct in my eyes she said, “As a young man seeking to grow your business, you need a mature person full of wisdom to guide you and me being elderly I am the best candidate to provide this to you .” Shocked by her answer, I further asked her, ” Are you saying am not matured ?”. Surprisingly she answered, ” Yes. You are still young and you need guidance from a mature person.”
My greatest challenge in life has been to struggle with the negative attitude from people like this woman who undermine my capabilities because of my age. They call me overzealous, a dreamer, immature and sometimes stubborn because I have a vision they can’t comprehend. If I listened to them, I would probably still be a Finance Assistant struggling in a small town. I call them killers of dreams because they manage to demotivate young people with higher ambition calling them dreamers, immature, or overzealous.
You’ll find them in your work place or at your Church, some of them are your family members, for some it’s their parents or siblings; killers of dreams who’ll never support your ambitions but have every reason why you’ll fail. They profess maturity and wisdom with very little success of their own to point at apart from their age. Friends, maturity or wisdom does not come with age.
Fellow youths; chase that dream, if they couldn’t envision it for themselves they’ll definitely not envision it for you. They discourage you because your aspirations are beyond their imagination; sometimes it’s because they fear you’ll succeed and your success will be a continuous reminder of their failure. Therefore keep pushing.
