"IT HAS ALWAYS WORKED" WILL COST YOU A FORTUNE SOMEDAY

Poultry farming has one of the most diverse approaches to management. In spite of the differences in management styles, the fundamentals of poultry management remain the same.

In the vastness of the available knowledge regarding poultry management, some people have adopted potentially catastrophic management styles. At first it is all they know but with time it becomes "It has always worked fine this way." Left unchecked, this approach is a hazard in waiting!

A number of times, we have had some potential clients consult us especially about brooding but it's mostly disheartening to realise the client is simply asking to compare with what they know, especially those who have been doing poultry for some time already.
Just recently, a client sought our guidance on the management of the new flock. To understand the situation better I asked how they have always done it, turns out, for a breed that requires double vaccination they only vaccinate once (Gumburo vaccine) no second dose and no Newcastle vaccine.
I thought it necessary to present the possible dangers that lie ahead with such an approach and the clients response? We have been doing it this way for more than a year now and "it has always worked fine"
We couldn't agree on a number of things so I left the client to have it their way and alas! Turned out the poultry house hosted two other different chickens from different flocks and the biosecurity was compromised. In less than 24 hours they lost about 10 chickens suddenly due to Gumburo (as determined by the vet).
Though measures were taken to combat the situation it was a little to late and the damage was done yet it was very much preventable.

A number of poultry farmers would like to make improvements in their chicken rearing but they are nowhere near willing to change how they have always done things.
For instance, there's conventional medicine and boosters as well as herbal medicine and boosters, understanding either of the two or both is helpful as compared to someone having the two all mixed up. I stand to be corrected but in no way is it recommended to administer both herbal medicine and conventional medicine at the same time.

People like Aquavilla Farms are front runners in the use of herbal medicine, enquire.

Knowledge might be diverse, but never be too rigid to heed sound advice on the pretext of "IT HAS ALWAYS WORKED"

WHICH BREED IS BEST?

This is a million dollar question to every would be or existing broiler farmer.
Every farmer wants that one magical breed that will have minimal mortalities if any, fast growth and eventually bigger profit margins on every batch.

Unfortunately, hatchery problems exist and we can not totally rule them out!
However, quite often than not, stunted growth and high mortality rate is a matter of flaw in the poultry management process. Most of these flaws are so subtle that it would be hard to tell they caused the poor growth or high mortality. This is even harder where the farmer had used the same flawed method previously and it worked just fine!

The best breed is "GOOD MANAGEMENT BREED"
Proper management is the best breed.
Before stones are thrown at me for whatever reason, consider this: how come people are giving varying experiences about the same breeds. You would hear farmer A say breed X is the worst and then farmer C states breed X has actually been the best for them?
Yes, hatchery problems exist and, unfortunately, they can hit any hatchery according to my observation. And if mortalities hit especially in the first two weeks a post mortem is significant in helping whether it's a hatchery problem or not.
At least, be sure not to collect weak chicks for a start. The more active the chicks the better.
Brooding plays the most significant part in the growth and health of a chick. With a proper analysis, chances are that we might find 3 quarters of the complications in rearing chickens are attributed to some mishaps during brooding.
Better brooding, gives better growth and immunity to some infections.

Management is a long subject of discussion in itself but if we refine our management models, we would have minimal challenges as compared to present day.

PS: If post mortem reports repeatedly show a hatchery problem as cause of multiple mortalities, perhaps an alternative breeder should be considered.
