"Spain generates so much solar electricity that prices go negative on sunny days — the country has too much clean energy and not enough storage to hold it.

This is the problem every energy transition wishes it had. Negative electricity prices mean generators are paying the grid to take their power. It means the sun is producing more electricity than Spain's 47 million people can absorb in that moment. It means that somewhere between the panels and the socket, the system ran out of capacity to match the supply.

On a sunny spring afternoon in Extremadura, solar farms generate electricity at a cost close to zero. The wholesale price collapses. Gas plants shut down. Nuclear plants ease back. And still there is more solar than the grid can absorb, so prices go negative and some generators curtail output rather than pay to export.

The solution is not fewer panels. The solution is more storage to hold midday surplus for the evening peak, more interconnection with France and Portugal to export the surplus to markets that need it, and more green hydrogen production to convert cheap midday electricity into a fuel that can be used when the sun is not shining.

Spain is building all three. The Bay of Biscay subsea cable to France will let Extremaduran solar power Parisian evenings. Battery storage is being deployed at solar farms. Green hydrogen electrolysers are being planned at sites where midday surplus will eventually be cheap enough to justify the capital.

Negative electricity prices are not a crisis. They are the signal that the infrastructure is not yet complete for the energy that is already arriving.
