Zimbabwe Agribusiness: Cabbage Farming for Maximum Profit

Cabbages can be grown throughout the year if you have irrigation.
But remember this: the cabbage market is flooded during the rainy season.
Timing is everything in agribusiness.

1. Produce What the Market Wants

Global markets now favour organic, naturally grown produce with no pesticide residues.
This is no longer a trend it is a market requirement.

Focus on organic methods

Use manure

Use home-made liquid fertilisers

Avoid chemical abuse

2. Land Preparation = Yield + Quality

You cannot cut corners here.

Proper land preparation

Make ridges

Mulch with grass and leaves

Improve soil structure and moisture retention

Healthy soil = healthy cabbages = higher prices.

3. Think Beyond Raw Cabbages: Value Addition

Profit is not only in selling fresh produce.

Value-addition options from cabbages:
Dried cabbage vegetables

Canned cabbages

Pickled cabbage

Pre-packed, branded fresh cabbages

Animal feed

Value addition extends shelf life and protects you from market gluts.

4. Market Research Comes First — Always

Before planting a single seed, ask:

Who am I selling to?

At what price?

In what quantities?

Weekly or monthly demand?

Target markets:

Supermarkets

Hospitality industry

Schools

Hospitals

Institutions

These buyers want reliable chain supply.

They do NOT want:

> “Sorry, this week I don’t have cabbages.”

5. Consistency Wins Contracts

Consistency is currency.

Supply weekly

Supply on time

Supply uniform quality

If you cannot meet demand alone: Team up with other farmers.
Agribusiness is not a competition, it is a value chain.

6. Why Farmers Struggle

Let’s be honest about our biggest problems:

We duplicate business ideas

We don’t do market research

We don’t advertise

We don’t brand or package properly

We don’t keep records

7. Simple Bookkeeping = Power

You must know your numbers:

What are my start-up costs?

How much does it cost to produce 1 cabbage?

How much am I selling 1 cabbage for?

What is my net profit?

Example:
$1 USD per cabbage

5,000 cabbages
= $5,000 USD

That is farming treated as a business, not a hobby.

8. Your Unique Selling Point (USP)

Ask yourself:

What makes my cabbages different?

Organic?

Consistent supply?

Better packaging?

Reliable delivery?

Stand out or disappear.

Final Thought

Farming is no longer about growing crops.
It is about strategy, markets, consistency, branding, and profits.

If you grow cabbages grow them deliberately, strategically, and profitably.

How to Acquire Mining title in Zimbabwe?
What is a Mining Title?

A Mining Title is a mining grant that is granted in terms of the Mines and Minerals 21:05 and Mining Regulations of Zimbabwe to a person or group of approved persons granting them the right to develop and exploit a properly delineated area for its mineral wealth.

In Zimbabwe, Mining Titles are issued by the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development by way of an application (s) which are submitted at provincial offices across the country.

• The first stage is to identify a particular site (Province) you are interested in.

• Thereafter, an approved prospector will verify whether your site is open for prospecting or not. Please note, if you cannot find the site for yourself, the PEGGER will help you find the site. Some areas are classified as not being open to prospecting and pe***ng or reserved against prospecting eg. cultivated land /arable lands, dip tanks, dams.

• If the land is less than 100 Hectares in which you want to peg a mine, then you ask for a written consent from the land owner, if the land is over 100 hectares, then the Pegger (Approved Prospector) will notify the land owner about his/her intentions to prospect and peg a mine within that Land.

• NB If the farm is more than 100 hectares, the landowner is just informed his consent is not needed.

• If the land is classified as state land, in some provinces, just inform the District Administrator for the intentions to prospect and peg, in some districts a letter of no objection is obtained from the rural councils at a cost.

• The Pegger (Approved Prospector) will then do the paper work together with the ground work, within 31 days from the day of posting a prospecting notice.

• The PEGGER will then submit the registration notice, pending registration.

• the Ministry of Mines will issue a certificate of registration after paying a site visit.

• A prospecting license is valid for two years from the date of issuance.

• A holder of a Prospecting license automatically acquires the rights to

Most businesses fail because they lack systems.

When there are no systems:
• Work depends on memory
• Decisions depend on the owner
• Results depend on effort, not structure

Every stable business needs clear systems:

• Operations
how daily work is done

• Sales
how customers are acquired
• Customer Service
how clients are handled
• Finance
how money is managed
• HR (People)
how staff are hired and managed
• Decision making
who decides what and when
Without systems, businesses struggle.
With systems, businesses last.

Copied🚩

Yesterday I was having a conversation with a barber.

I asked him how much he earns on his lowest day. He said that on a slow day he makes about $10–$15, and on busy days like weekends and holidays he makes around $20–$30 per day. He charges $1–$2 per head. (These are ghetto prices. In low-density areas or in the CBD, it’s usually $5 or more per head.)

That conversation made me realize something: some of these people are making more money than many professionalsby far. Let’s do the maths. If we assume an average of $10 per day, that’s about $300 per month or more. And if he operates in his own area (ghetto), there’s no transport cost. Rent might be as low as $50 for a table, and start-up capital can be less than $50 for clippers and a small solar backup. Most people can raise $50 if they really want to no excuses. We all have smartphones we could even sell to raise quick capital.

I also spoke to a young girl who was doing hairdressing there. She said she pockets $20 or more per day. She also does home calls. If we calculate that per month, she can make $400–$600, depending on whether she does “fix and supply.” I asked her when she learned the skill, and she told me she started after graduating because she had no choice. She began as an assistant.

I encouraged her to take a course as well (for example at a polytechnic or kuzvina colleges zvazara) in beauty therapy , nail tech and diversify her skills. I also advised her to use online marketing, post testimonials, and grow her client base. She agreed, and I told her I can help her with nice flyers and boosting her Facebook ads. She is doing amazing work.

When I asked about her goal, she said by April she plans to have more girls working under her in town (Avenues), and expand across Zimbabwe. She is not even thinking of applying for a job anymore. Imagine earning $400–$600 it’s better than what some of us earn.

I’m sharing these conversations to show you where you might be stuck. You’ve been applying for jobs for five years, yet in the same economy, a carpenter, contactor nahwindi & kombi driver, or even a barber can go home with $15–$20 per day (note: that’s after deals, not a salary).

That’s why you’re shocked to see people building houses, barbers sending their kids to A schools, while you’re still crying about government, opportunities, and blaming rural elders for “bad luck.”

*Growing Sweet Potatoes Organically*

*1 Acre Project Plan (Zimbabwe)*

By Dr. Barbara Nyagomo.

Promoting Sustainable Rural Development

*Project Overview*
This is a low-cost, high-impact agricultural project suitable for rural farmers and women’s groups looking to grow nutritious food and generate steady income. Sweet potatoes thrive in Zimbabwe’s warm climate and can be grown organically without chemical fertilizers or pesticides.

Best Time to Plant:
The rainy season (November–February) is ideal for planting sweet potatoes. Moist soil ensures good root development and vine survival without irrigation.

Planting Material:
Vines cost: $5 for 50 kg

Quantity needed for 1 acre: 300–400 kg of vines

(That’s about 6–8 bundles × 50 kg, costing roughly $30–$40 total)

Select disease-free vines from healthy mother plants.

🍠 Favourable Sweet Potato Varieties in Zimbabwe

1. Chingova drought-tolerant, good yield

2. German 2 (White-fleshed) – high yield, traditional taste

3. Beauregard orange-fleshed, rich in Vitamin A

4. Cordner popular in markets, good storage quality

5. Kakamega excellent for organic systems, sweet taste

Land Preparation

Option 1 (Zimbabwe traditional method):

Use a plough to make ridges 30–40 cm high and 1 m apart.

Plant vines along the top of ridges for good drainage and tuber growth.

Option 2 (Rwanda flat method):

Prepare soil with hoes, plant directly on flat, well-loosened soil.

Works well if soil is light and rainfall is moderate.

Both methods can succeed choose what fits your local soil type and tools.

Organic Soil Enrichment

Use cow dung or compost as manure before planting (5–10 tonnes per acre).

Mulch with dry grass it helps retain moisture and decomposes into natural fertilizer.

Avoid chemical fertilizers they harm soil health and increase costs.

💪 Labour Requirement

Not labour-intensive.

Land preparation (ploughing or hoeing): 2–3 days

Planting: 4–6 people can finish in one day

Weeding: minimal due to ground cover by vines

Harvest: after 4–5 months, depending on variety

Expected Yield (1 Acre)

Organic production: 8 to 12 tonnes (8,000–12,000 kg)

Under good management and rainfall, yields can reach 15 tonnes.

💰 Projected Income (Per Acre)

At Mbare Musika: Sweet potatoes sell for $0.30–$0.50 per kg (depending on season & quality).

Average selling price: $0.40/kg

Yield (kg) Selling Price ($/kg) Gross Income ($)

Estimated profit after expenses (vines, labour, transport): $2,000–$3,500 per acre

Value Addition Opportunities

1. Sweet Potato Chips – Healthy snack alternative

2. Sweet Potato Flour/Powder Used for porridge, bread, or baby food

3. Mashed Sweet Potato Packs For ready-to-eat or catering services

4. Sweet Potato Bread, Donuts & Muffins Increasingly popular in urban areas

Processing extends shelf life and increases value 3–5× compared to raw tubers.

Traditional Storage Methods

Store tubers in a cool, dark hut with good airflow.

Spread on a raised platform covered with dry grass or banana leaves.

Avoid direct sunlight and moisture to prevent rotting.

Well-stored sweet potatoes can last 2–4 months.

Market Analysis

Local markets: Mbare Musika (Harare), Sakubva (Mutare), and other city markets.

Rural markets: Local schools, hospitals, and community buyers.

Export potential: Regional trade to Zambia, Mozambique, Rwanda.

High demand: Urban consumers and health-conscious buyers prefer organic, orange-fleshed varieties.

*Conclusion*

Organic sweet potato farming is low-cost, nutritious, and sustainable.
From $30 startup cost for vines and basic manure, you can generate over $3,000 per acre in 4–5 months.
It empowers families, improves soil health, and builds local food security.

Standard EcoCash Requirement

EcoCash normally expects:
USD $200–$500 float minimum

USD $100–$200 cash reserve

Low Startup Strategy :
You can start SMALL by:
✅ Partnering with a local tuckshop (share float)
✅ Using your personal savings as initial float

• Cash-In
• Cash-Out
• Airtime sales

Total minimum to start: USD $150–$200

5. How EcoCash Agents Make Money

Commission Structure

EcoCash pays you for each transaction. The bigger your float and the busier your area, the more you earn.

Your money comes from:
✔️ Cash-Out highest commission
✔️ Cash-In

✔️ Bill payments
✔️ Merchant payments support

With the right strategy, an agent can make $15–$40 per day, and busy areas earn $300–$800 per month.

6. Profit Maximization Strategy
1. Choose a High-Traffic Location

Markets
Bus terminus
Shops
Near clinics
Rural business centers

Where there is movement, there is money.

2. Manage Your Float Smartly

Your biggest asset is your float.
• Too little float = missed transactions
• Too much float = dead capital

Balance float DAILY.

3. Offer Multiple Services

Don’t rely on one income stream. Add:

Airtime

ZESA tokens

DSTV payments

Cash transfers

Sim card replacements

One customer → multiple services → multiple commissions.

4. Build Trust in Your Community

People must feel SAFE using money with you.
Be:
✔️ Reliable
✔️ Always available
✔️ Transparent

Trust is a currency.

5. Open Early, Close Late

EcoCash is a volume business.
The more hours you operate, the more money you make.

6. Keep Records & Reconcile Daily

Never operate blindly.
Know your:

Cash balance

Float balance

Daily commissions

Losses & fraud risks

A strategic business is a profitable business.

7. Growth Strategy (From Small to Big)

Start as:
Small Agent ➜ Super-Agent ➜ Multiple outlets

How to expand:
1. Reinvest your daily profits.

2. Open a second point at a busy location.

3. Recruit someone to run your first shop.

4. Scale to 3–5 outlets in 12 months.

This turns your EcoCash business into a job-creating enterprise.

8.
You were not created to depend on uncertain incomes.
You were created to build, to lead, to rise.

Becoming an EcoCash Agent is not just a business
it is an entry point into entrepreneurship,
a door to financial independence, and
a path to becoming your own boss.

*CROSS-BORDER TRADING ZIMBABWE-ZAMBIA*

Practical advice about buying goods in Zambia especially for Zimbabweans who are planning to go for the first time and are wondering what to expect and where to buy.

I believe in empowering others.

1. Transport

Bus fare (return) is about $35–$40 around $20 one way and another $20 for the return trip. It’s wise to budget an extra $10 for your luggage to be safe.

Buses depart at 6am, 12pm, 2pm, and other times up to around 6pm. Some buses spend the night at the border, while others go straight across.
👉 I recommend taking one that crosses into Zambia the same day you’ll arrive in Lusaka around 11pm.

2. What to Buy and Where to Find It

👕 Men’s wear Golf T-shirts, jeans, chinos, cargo pants, shirts available at Comesa and Kamwala markets.

👗 Ladies’ wear..... Kamwala has beautiful, trendy outfits, often better priced than local markets.

🧵 Chitenge (6 yards cotton fabric) You can buy in Zambia for about $15 a piece. Found at Comesa and Kamwala.

🩲 Underwear Comesa has many shops for that.

⚽ Soccer jerseys Also at Comesa.

👟 Footwear, sling bags, slides Found at Carousel Mall.

🩳 Tights and casual wear from Kamwala.

💇🏽‍♀️ Braids and weaves available in Kamwala.

🍬 Sweets, drinks, biscuits, tissues, sanitary pads, skincare oils also available there or can be bought on the bus.

3. Capital and Business Tips

Your starting capital depends on your goals. You can start with as little as $150, but as with any business, sit down and calculate your transport, stock costs, and profit margin so you don’t end up working for nothing.

💡 Smart Tip:
Before you travel, take orders from customers in Zimbabwe.
Go on TikTok or Facebook and search Kamwala Market Zambia you’ll see posts of what’s being sold there.
Post those pictures on your WhatsApp Status people will start giving you orders. That way, you don’t just go and buy randomly; you’ll already have customers waiting for your goods.

That’s how you grow faster and build a sustainable business.

4. Extra Practical Tips

🚌 If unsure about anything, ask the bus crew — they’re very helpful.
🇿🇲 Zambians are generally friendly; don’t hesitate to ask for directions or advice.

🚻 Toilets are pay toilets (about 5 kwacha).
🏨 Lodges are near the bus ranks, where you can shower or sleep overnight.
🍛 Food is available just ask, and people will guide you.

If your budget is tight, you can even sleep on the bus it’s safe and clean.

In Closing
Let’s do business with wisdom, dignity, and unity.
We are capable, resourceful, and blessed.

May God continue to guide and prosper every Zimbabwean entrepreneur.
