🤔❓What Is VAT (Value Added Tax)

👉🏽 In Zimbabwe, Value Added Tax (VAT) is an indirect tax on the consumption of taxable goods and services, which is levied on transactions, including the importation of goods and services, rather than on income or profit.

👉🏽 The tax is governed by the Value Added Tax Act [Chapter 23:12] and it is ultimately paid by the final consumer, while businesses collect and pass the tax to the government.

👉🏽 As a business, your eligibility to register for VAT depends on your type of business and turnover. Here’s a clear breakdown:

-------------------------------------------------

❓✅ Who must register for VAT in Zimbabwe :

1️⃣ Compulsory Registration (Mandatory)

If your annual taxable turnover exceeds or is likely to exceed Usd $25 000 (or Zwg equivalent).

Your business deals in taxable supplies (goods or services subject to VAT).

If your turnover is below this threshold but you expect to exceed it in the next 12 months, you still must register.

2️⃣ Voluntary Registration

If your turnover is below the threshold, but you want to register for VAT, you can apply for VAT Voluntary Registration

3️⃣ Exempt Businesses

Businesses dealing only in exempt supplies (like certain financial services, residential accommodation, education, etc.) cannot register for VAT

4️⃣ Non-compliance

If you are a business who meets the turnover threshold but fails to register, ZIMRA can compulsorily register your business for VAT. This can result in penalties, interest, and payment of the overdue VAT.

5️⃣ Government Tenders

As of January 2025, unregistered bidders who submit a tender for a government contract valued at US$25,000 or more are required to register for VAT.

-------------------------------------------------

✅✅ Steps to check if you’re eligible:

1️⃣ Review your turnover (past 12 months and projected next 12 months).

2️⃣ Check if your products/services are VAT taxable or exempt.

👉🏽 If taxable and above the threshold → compulsory registration.

👉🏽 If taxable but below threshold → optional registration.

👉🏽 If exempt → not eligible.

🔥🔥Know Your QPDs.

Quarterly Payments Dates, commonly known as (QPDs), are due dates on which Provisional Income Tax returns must be submitted.

Provisional Income Tax is a certain type of tax which is applicable to companies, sole traders, trusts, independent contractors, partners, and non-executive directors.

This type of tax, which is calculated in advance and at the start of the year, is based on business Income estimates for the year and is calculated at a rate of 25% on net income (profit).

For instance, a business can estimate that it will generate a net income of $10000 for the year, it will then need to file quarterly provisional tax returns and settle the tax liabilities accordingly.

These returns are filed quarterly, that is, after every 3 months, and the due dates for filing the returns are March 25th, June 25th, September 25th and December 20th.

It is important to note that for each quarter, the provisional tax liability payments are settled as follows:

1st Quarter - 10%
2nd Quarter - 25%
3rd Quarter - 30%
4th Quarter - 35%

At year-end, and the provisional tax liability has been settled, the business's actual profit for the year will be taken into account and determined if the business paid less or more tax than what they are supposed to pay based on their actual profit for the year.

If there was an underpayment, the business will be required to settle the outstanding balance.

If there was an overpayment, the business will be refunded on the excess amount, or it can be carried forward into the next period to settle future tax liabilities.

So having said that, it is important for businesses to have their tax affairs in order, and avoid financial complications that can arise from improper tax management such as interests, penalties, audits or even potential criminal charges in severe instances.
