*Overall Aim*

To Promote Professional and Cost Effective Borehole Drilling in Zimbabwe

*Objectives*

• To train and equip the many borehole siting field technicians who are currently practicing without training or sufficient knowledge in hydrogeology resulting in poor borehole siting jobs and many dry holes

• To train and equip new and aspiring borehole siting technicians with the necessary skills for effective borehole siting and development

• To capacitate drilling companies in reducing incidences of dry hole occurrences some of which is attributed to poor borehole siting skills and techniques

• To supporting NGO staff and government departments involved in WASH programs to develop their capacity to manage or supervise borehole drilling projects

• To create an awareness about local area groundwater occurrence amongst government, community and opinion leaders

*Background to the course*

Cost effective borehole delivery does not mean cheaper boreholes.

It means optimum value is obtained for the money invested over the long term.

For boreholes to be cost effective they have to be properly sited and professionally constructed.

To effectively site, design and construct boreholes, an understanding of the processes and factors affecting the occurrence and movement of groundwater is required.

Groundwater occurrence and movement in turn depend on the underlying rocks.
Therefore, a basic knowledge of geology is essential in understanding groundwater occurrence.
