Africa needs an insurance renaissance to drive resilience

Mr. Trevor Manuel, the former South African Finance Minister delivered a keynote address this morning at the and his address called on Africa’s insurance industry to lead a new era of resilience, innovation, and inclusion

Speaking to the industry leaders, regulators, and stakeholders gathered for , Mr. Manuel said the continent stands at a pivotal moment where insurance can move from being a safety net to becoming a driver of economic growth

"We cannot insure our way out of poverty, but we can insure our way into prosperity." This requires an Insurance Renaissance; one that puts the customer first, embraces technology, and confronts the risks of our time head-on."

Call to action

Mr. Manuel challenged the industry to think beyond traditional products and to partner with government on national development goals. He pointed to insurance’s potential in funding green energy, supporting small business, and protecting livelihoods against climate shocks.

"Let be remembered as the year we stopped talking about potential and started delivering on it."

Trust is earned long before a claim is made

Insurance is often described as a promise,

Promises, however, only have value when they are understood and honored. Across many African markets, one of the insurance industry's greatest challenges is not awareness, it is confidence,

People want clarity. They want transparency. Most importantly, they want to know that if the unexpected happens, they will have a trusted partner beside them,

Building that confidence begins long before a claim is submitted. It starts with clear communication, honest advice, realistic expectations, and helping customers understand what they are buying. When customers understand their cover, they make better financial decisions. When insurers communicate openly, trust grows.

As highlighted by Lindah at the 2026 Insurance Institute of Zimbabwe annual winter school, insurance should never feel complicated. It should give people confidence to protect what they have worked hard to build and insurers should co-create products around real life experiences.
