In 1976, Jon began volunteering with St John – and half a century later, his commitment to caring for others hasn’t changed as he continues to volunteer with SAAS.
Over the years, Jon has seen moments few forget. He still remembers the thrilling intensity assisting to deliver of a 10‑week premature baby in the back of a Holden panel van ambulance.
There were challenging nights too. One that stands out was a cold, wet night on the Heysen Trail, alongside his SAAS partner, an SES volunteer, and a patient – waiting for clearer weather so a helicopter could land.
What Jon treasures most is being a valued member of the Yankalilla team, sharing life‑saving skills, his knowledge and experience, and earning the trust of Yankalilla as an ambulance officer.
In his 50 years of service, plenty has changed. Ambulances have evolved from Holden panel vans to Mercedes VS30s, while communication methods have transitioned from landline to satellite phones and GRN radio.
Yet the fundamentals remain the same:
✅ D.R.S.A.B.C.
✅ Be kind
✅ Be caring
✅ Be gentle with every patient
After 50 years, Jon’s message is simple: technology and methods may change, but compassion never goes out of service.
💚 Thank you, Jon, for five decades of dedication to the Yankalilla community. Congratulations!
