The printing process is basically divided into 3 subsections, namely Print Origination, Machine Printing and Print Finishing. Printing Tradesmen in the printing industry choose one area of specialisation from the above 3 and that will describe their trade, ie print originator, machine printer or print finisher.
PRINT ORIGINATION
this is basically the beginning of the printing process where originals are prepared ready for the press, depending on the type of press to be used. Originals are obtained from photographers, artists, typists etc and printing facilitates their multiplication into more copies.
In this section you find skills like graphic design, plate making, etc
Print Origination has since lost many processes or skills due to technological advancements in the world. Processes like positive or negative film making and the darkroom have since been replaced by Computer To Plate (CTP) technology. Letter Assembly - the art of composing metal type to tell a story is now of minimal use in cases of hot foiling and other decorative works. Computer programs like quack express, pagemaker, freehand are gradually becomimg rare and taking over is the adobe suite, the user friendly and resilient CorelDraw among others. Zimbabwe has since witnessed quite a number of very creative young graphic designer conversant with the new technology. The future of Print Origination is in the computer and less and less in solutions, emulsions or any other hardware
MACHINE PRINTING
In this department you find people with multi colour stained overalls the PRINTERS. They get their templates from originators in the gorm plates, rubbers etc. Machine printing comes in many processes like FLEXOGRAHPY, GRAVURE, SCREEN PRINTING, LETERPRESS,
the ever present LITHOGRAPHY and the evergrowing XEROGRAPHY commomly known as DIGITAL PRINTING.
Flexography works on plastics mainly and remains cheapest and widely used in that area.
Gravure works perfect on bank notes and is a bit rare.
Screen Printing answers on textile and rigid substrates like metal, wood, etc it under threat from new technology like heat press, Direct To Fabric DTF, DTG etc. It is still low on costs
Letterpress is slowly saying its goodbyes due to advances in technology,
Lithography is most common process, it is still the cheapest on mass production on paper of varying grammage and types. Lithography has stood the test of time, its machinery proving to be the strongest ever to be made considering machinery made as far back as 1960 are still working remarkably well, that is , one of its advantages over DIGITAL printing whose machines have a lifespan of just 5years or less. the disadvantage being only on power consumption
Digital printing slowly making inroads with the advantage on power usage, less messy, faster and less wastage. It remains generally expensive on long runs but suitable for short run presentation work. it also saves on space.
