kana zvozokwira mutengo hazvo but mazuvano BOND PAPER rakatungamira. The price of bond paper, the most common type of paper in the country, has shot up in USD terms by up to 300 per cent in 4months from 2.50usd to 8usd per A4ream. This automatically drives the cost of print production up, resulting in uncompetitive pricing.

THE BOOK

A written or printed work consisting of pages glued or sewn together along one side and bound in covers.: this is one of many descriptions of a book.

A book carries the works of an author or writer and keeps for even centuries ahead. The care given to a book determines the length of its life and condition. A book is usually renewed in rebinds, reprints or reedting .

Nowadays, it is now easier to become a writer or an author than it was, say before the turn of the new millenium when artists had to go through a rigorous process before getting a contract, which was usually third party. The sad part is that now the rewards in writing are becoming less and less attractive to the artist, due especially to the death of the publishing and distribution industry in Zimbabwe. Piracy like in the whole arts industry has wrecked havoc in the book industry. Original books are now rare to find in the market. It is not a surprise nowadays to find pirated books being sold by registered booksellers. Instittutions like schools are even buying pirated stuff, because most prirated books look very original or even more beautiful than the original ones.
An original book is one from the sale of which the rights owner gets a reward

The issue of is a cancer rapidly destroying the whole arts and creative industry much to the detriment of the practioners, the national economy and the particular industry.
Solutions to the scourge of piracry , largely lie with policing, legislation and to certain extent creativity within the arts and creative industry itself. How on earth can local authorities actually licence a whole shop selling pirated products? We have such shops in.Harare and many other cities.

It is sad that nowadays there are very few writers associations or clubs which can work to lobby government to look and make decisive decisions in the fight against piracy. Honestly, writers can not survive on charity.

It is applausible that against all odds the pen is not resting at all. Inspired by great passion, talent and abundance of untold stories many writers young and old are entering the fray, touching on many subjects.

We still have a handful of publishers willing to work our writers, though with complaints that it takes ages before one's work sees the light of day.

The self-publishing route which is a bit convienient to the writer but this means self funding, which sometimes leads to substandard work due to lack of funds. A self publishing needs to hire an editor (this is important, though usually writers take short cuts and go on to press with unedited stuff, you can not edit your work satisfactorily),. pay for printing and distribution costs.

They are many good and experienced editors in the country.

These days it is now possible to print as little as 10 novels, which was almost difficult in the past. One of the factors affecting the book industry is the issue of pricing, where unit costs are usually on the high side as compared to other countries such as China. The laws.of production shows that higher quantities result in lower unit costs.

In Zimbabwe people end up saying Ngaiuye Iripo Yacho Iyoyo

The printing process is basically divided into 3 subsections, namely Print Origination, Machine Printing and Print Finishing. Printing Tradesmen in the printing industry choose one area of specialisation from the above 3 and that will describe their trade, ie print originator, machine printer or print finisher.

PRINT ORIGINATION

this is basically the beginning of the printing process where originals are prepared ready for the press, depending on the type of press to be used. Originals are obtained from photographers, artists, typists etc and printing facilitates their multiplication into more copies.
In this section you find skills like graphic design, plate making, etc
Print Origination has since lost many processes or skills due to technological advancements in the world. Processes like positive or negative film making and the darkroom have since been replaced by Computer To Plate (CTP) technology. Letter Assembly - the art of composing metal type to tell a story is now of minimal use in cases of hot foiling and other decorative works. Computer programs like quack express, pagemaker, freehand are gradually becomimg rare and taking over is the adobe suite, the user friendly and resilient CorelDraw among others. Zimbabwe has since witnessed quite a number of very creative young graphic designer conversant with the new technology. The future of Print Origination is in the computer and less and less in solutions, emulsions or any other hardware

MACHINE PRINTING

In this department you find people with multi colour stained overalls the PRINTERS. They get their templates from originators in the gorm plates, rubbers etc. Machine printing comes in many processes like FLEXOGRAHPY, GRAVURE, SCREEN PRINTING, LETERPRESS,
the ever present LITHOGRAPHY and the evergrowing XEROGRAPHY commomly known as DIGITAL PRINTING.
Flexography works on plastics mainly and remains cheapest and widely used in that area.
Gravure works perfect on bank notes and is a bit rare.
Screen Printing answers on textile and rigid substrates like metal, wood, etc it under threat from new technology like heat press, Direct To Fabric DTF, DTG etc. It is still low on costs
Letterpress is slowly saying its goodbyes due to advances in technology,
Lithography is most common process, it is still the cheapest on mass production on paper of varying grammage and types. Lithography has stood the test of time, its machinery proving to be the strongest ever to be made considering machinery made as far back as 1960 are still working remarkably well, that is , one of its advantages over DIGITAL printing whose machines have a lifespan of just 5years or less. the disadvantage being only on power consumption
Digital printing slowly making inroads with the advantage on power usage, less messy, faster and less wastage. It remains generally expensive on long runs but suitable for short run presentation work. it also saves on space.

PRINT FINISHING AND CONVERTING

Guys here brings asthetics to the field of printing. They work hard to check and correct errors made from the start to finish. they make printing products. Here you find skills like book binding, foiling, numbering, carton and box making among others.
Everything is set ready for delivery in this department

The printing industry is one of the biggest industries in the world. It is very generous with numerous job and business opportunities.

Printing imports are also hurting local industry
There is call for government, NGOs, Corporate world to first consider local players before thinking of sourcing services from outside the country. Local expertise can print anything, i mean anthing.
