Welcome to our month edition of the Question and Answer segment this month's will answer the following question

How much are the brakes important on a bicycle

Answer

brake cables are literally your “stop when you need to” system. If they fail, the bike won’t stop in time, and that’s dangerous.

Here’s why good quality brake cables + proper brake work matter:

*Why brake cables have to be in good condition*
- *Reliable stopping power*: A solid cable transfers your hand force straight to the brakes. No stretch, no fraying, no delay.
- *Safety first*: Worn or rusty cables can snap or stick. If brakes don’t bite, you can’t avoid cars, potholes, or pedestrians in Harare traffic.
- *Control on hills & wet roads*: Zimbabwe’s rainy season + hills mean you need brakes that respond instantly.

*Advantages of good quality brakes / brake cables*
1. *Consistent stopping distance* → You stop where you expect to, every time.
2. *Better modulation* → You can brake lightly to slow down, or hard to stop fast, without jerking or skidding.
3. *Longer lifespan* → Stainless or coated cables resist rust and don’t fray quickly. Less replacements, less cost long-term.
4. *Less maintenance* → Quality cables and housing keep out dirt/moisture, so they stay smooth longer.
5. *More confidence riding* → When you trust your brakes, you ride safer and more relaxed, especially commuting to work.
6. *Protects other parts* → Good cables reduce strain on brake levers and calipers, so the whole system lasts.

*Quick check tip for riders*: If your lever feels spongy, the cable looks rusty/frayed, or braking takes longer than it used to, replace the cable and housing ASAP.

Weird & Facts
about Bicycles” every 2nd Wednesday - that’s a series I’d subscribe to.

month’s pick:
the valve stem

valve core. That little rubber + metal piece is literally the gatekeeper of your ride.

Weird & Fact #1: The Valve Stem
*What it does*: That rubber valve is a one-way door. You pump air in, then it seals shut so pressure stays in the tube. No valve = instant flat, even with a perfect tube.

*2 types you’ll see:*
1. *Presta valve* - Thin, skinny, with a tiny locknut on top. Common on road bikes + higher-end BMX/MTB. Holds higher pressure 100-130 PSI. Needs a presta pump head.
2. *Schrader valve* - The fat car/motorbike style valve. What most BMX 20” and kids bikes use. Tougher, easier to find pumps for, runs 30-100 PSI.

*Weird fact*: Presta valves were actually invented so skinny road rims didn’t need a huge hole. Smaller hole = stronger rim. Schrader came from cars in 1893 and just took over everything else.

*Underrated because*: Everyone blames the tube or tyre when they get flats, but 20% of flats are just leaky/dirty valve cores. A $0.10 valve core tool can save a whole tube.

Can’t wait for next month’s 2nd Wednesday. Any guesses on what part you’ll feature? next

Today we join the rest of the world to celebrate Father’s Day. We appreciate all that fathers do — working hard every single day to provide and protect. Even those who have retired, we still call on them for the wisdom they share with us.
So Bicycle Zimbabwe would like to say Happy Father’s Day. Thank you to all the fathers who ride their bicycles to work, setting an example of dedication and strength. We see you and we salute you

Welcome to our month edition of Q &A

This month's question does the tyres or inner tube pressure matters

Answer

Using the right PSI is one of the fastest ways to protect your wheels ( inner. Tube and tyre )and ride better.

1. *Check sidewall*: Every brand/tube/tyre combo has different pressure range printed on the sidewall. e.g. “35-65 PSI” or “3.0-4.5 BAR”. Don’t just guess.
2. *Match tube + tyre brand*: Same brand usually means the bead/tube size tolerances line up. Less pinch flats, more even pressure, and easier to get that balanced feel.

Disadvantages of low tyre or tube pressure
Running too soft causes problems fast:

1. *Pinch flats / “snake bites”*
Hit a pothole or curb and the tube gets pinched between rim + tyre. 2 cuts = flat instantly.

2. *Slow + hard work*
Soft tyres create more rolling resistance. Feels like you’re dragging an anchor. You’ll burn more energy for same speed.

3. *Poor handling*
Bike feels wobbly in corners. The tyre folds over instead of holding its shape, so cornering + braking gets sketchy, especially on BMX or MTB.

4. *Rim damage*
Rim takes the impact instead of the tyre cushion. Dents, cracks, or “flat spots” on the rim = expensive fix.

5. *Faster tyre wear*
Sidewalls flex too much and crack. Tread also wears unevenly on the edges.

6. *Burping for tubeless*
If you’re tubeless, low PSI lets air escape when you corner hard. Tyre literally burps off the rim.
