On December 6, 1989, a 25 year-old man named Marc Lepine walked into the University of Montreal’s School of Engineering Building with semi-automatic rifle. He began a shooting spree during which he murdered fourteen and injured thirteen others: nine women and four men.

Lepine believed it was because of students that he was not accepted to the engineering school. Before killing himself, he left an explanatory letter behind which contained a tirade against feminists as well as a list of nineteen prominent women whom he particularly despised.

Maud Chifamba lost her father when she was five, in 2002 before she started first grade. At that time, her mother diagnosed with cancer could not care for her and her brother, whom is two years younger.

In 2005, when she was in grade 3, during the mid-year exams, she was mistakenly given a grade 4 exam paper, on which she scored 100%. The following term during the same year, she requested a grade 5 test paper, on which she achieved the highest score. She proceeded to grade seven and scored 6 units.

As fees for high school were a challenge, she studied on her own from home and completed her Ordinary Level in just two years, in 2009. She was later identified by the Ministry of Education and awarded financial assistance for her advanced level in which she scored 12 points in 2011.

On November 25, 1960, female activists Patria, Minerva and Maria Teresa Mirabel were brutally murdered in the Dominican Republic. The three sisters wove their way into history as symbols of feminist resistance and 25 November was declared the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
Thirty years later, in 1991, 23 participants from across the world were brought together for the first Women’s Global Leadership Institute with the goal of building the global women’s right’s movement.
With the goal to build awareness on gender-based violence they established the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence Campaign, choosing to symbolically link November 25th, International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and December 10th, International Human Rights Day.

The camapaign this year dwells on a number of themes primarily "Leave No One Behined" by the UNiTE Campaign of UN Women and "Together We Can End GBV in Education" by Education International.
The theme "Leave No One Behined: End Violence against Women &Girls", dwells on the the core principle of the transformative 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The theme reinforces the UNiTE Campaign’s commitment to a world free from violence for all women and girls around the world, while reaching the most underserved and marginalized, including refugees, migrants, minorities, indigenous peoples, and populations affected by conflict and natural disasters, amongst others, first.
The theme of ‘Together We Can End GBV in Education!,’ provides a strong activist focus on the available human rights tools and framework in global advocacy for more effective laws, policies and institutions that effectively prevent and address violence in and around educational settings.
