The rumour is the Diaspora (the "+44s" and "+1s" and the "+27s" etc) are exhausted. They sent money for a house; it’s still at the window level after 5 years. They sent money for a business; the relatives bought a car.
And so, I did some digging and discovered that The Diaspora Remittances to Zimbabwe grew to $2.6 Billion in 2024, but most of it was "consumption-oriented" (groceries and bills)🙆🏽. I also discovered that there is a $3.8 - $5.7 Billion potential in annual diaspora investments if the "Penguin Protocol" (dependency and misuse) is replaced by "Legacy Partnerships" and good business practices.
However, while The Diaspora is getting fatigued, back home, there is a Local Hunger. Graduates (the "Thirsty Youths") are sitting on degrees but have no "capital" to start. They feel like "beggars" to their own siblings abroad.
The Entrepreneurial Spirit is undeniable. First of all, they don't know what to do. Secondly, they don't know how to do it.
The Failure Rate: 85% of small businesses in Zimbabwe eventually fail due to "lack of managerial skills" and "poor customer service".

*THE PRICING MODEL continued...*
4. *Break Even Point* - Businesses are different. Some businesses involve equipment. E.g. If you are a cameraman and you buy new equipment, don't try to recover all your costs from one customer. It may take 10 customers for you to recover your full investment. This means that 10 customers is your Break Even Point. You need to know at what point you will recover all your costs. Anything that you make after that point is profit.
5. *Operational Costs* - this is different from the cost of equipment. These are costs that increase when your work increases. If you are a Painter, the more products you paint, the more paint you will use and the more time you will spend doing the work. Operational Costs is the money you spend in your everyday operations. It includes the cost of Airtime, fuel, lunch, stationery, labour, electricity and any cost that increases when the work increases. These can also be called Variable Costs.
When you are working out your price you should understand that some of your costs are always changing.
6. *Fixed Costs* - there are some costs that are fixed. These are costs you have to pay whether or not you make a profit e.g. Rent. Your landlord does not care that you are making a loss. That is your problem. Rent must be paid in full and on time.
So when you come up with your price you must factor-in your fixed costs. You must know how many customers you need for you to raise your rent money. So, your pricing model should look something like this:
*Capital + Fixed Costs + Variable Costs + Desired Profit = Price*

Every item that you sell in your shop should use this formula. Every product should carry a component of capital, rent, labour, electricity, lunch, transport, marketing etc. If you're selling a pencil you must know how much that pencil is contributing towards rent, electricity, your lunch, your salary and transport.

*THE PRICING MODEL*
The biggest question in business is: *are you making a profit?*
The whole point of being in business is to make a profit. If you're not making a profit you will soon be out of business. Here are some things to consider when coming up with your pricing model:
1. *Costing* - don't do business before you know how to do costing. What is your total cost? How much does it cost you to produce the product? You must factor in every little item, from raw materials, labour, electricity, transport, insurance, Airtime, time, printing & stationery etc. If you leave out any cost that is the very thing that will pull you down.
2. *Target Market* - if your intended customers cannot afford your prices, it means you are targeting the wrong people. If people are always negotiating you downwards or they complain that you are too expensive, then those are not your true customers. Your product quality and price should always match your target market. Do not sell a Mercedes Benz at the price of a Honda Fit, or to people who can only afford a Honda Fit. Know your target market. The marketing approach is different for every market segment. Just because you are in Chitungwiza doesn't mean you should only sell to people in Chitungwiza. Think bigger!!
3. *Markup* - do not price yourself out of the market. A markup is cost + desired profit. Your desired profit should be reasonable. It should correspond with your target market's ability to pay. It is pointless to charge a price that nobody within your range of customers can afford. You won't have any sales.
