💥 5 O' Levels requirement for a driver's licence — that's a big one and it's been causing a lot of discussion here in Zim 🚗📚
Just to be clear: As of 2026, Zimbabwe's law does _not_ officially require 5 O' Levels to get a driver's licence. The current requirement from VID is still: National ID, proof of residence, pass eyesight + theory + practical test.
Arguments people make AGAINST it
Lots of capable drivers they're don'thave 5 o levels. This would lock them out
Driving Academics*: You can be a safe, skilled driver without 5 O' Levels. Driving is about practice, discipline, and attitude
Economic impact*: Transport, farming, delivery jobs would be hit hard. Many breadwinners rely on driving
My take
The goal behind it — safer roads and more competent drivers — is good. No one wants reckless drivers.
But the challenge is _how_ you measure that competence. Theory tests, proper training, and stricter practicals already test if someone can read signs and follow rules, whether they have 5 O' Levels or not.
A middle ground some people suggest: Keep the licence open to all, but add mandatory defensive driving + theory classes, and stricter testing. That way we raise standards without cutting people off.
