Meet Aggie , a leader from Zambia representing Massa Women in Mining Industrial Minerals Cooperative.Building a women-led enterprise in the extractive sector comes with challenges around fair pricing and market access.
“When we mine these minerals, we are often forced to sell at a low price because our women don't have the bargaining power,” says Aggie. “But if women are empowered knowledge-wise and technical-wise we gain the bargaining power to sell our products at a good price.”
Driven by a shared vision to tackle economic hardship, send children to school, and strengthen household food security, the women of Mansa came together, secured a manganese mining license, and created a unified voice.
Through the engagements organized by the AU, Aggie and her cooperative gained global visibility and learned strategies on trademarking, industrialization, and meeting international standards to scale their operations. Her journey shows what happens when women receive the right knowledge, networks, and institutional platforms: Empower the women, and you empower the nation.
