What a stunning drum....but does it sound any good? Ultimately this is what I wanted to check out recording this 14x6.5 Hammered Steel Shell Snare Drum from . The ‘Purple Titanium’ plating is stunning, and depending on the incidence / angle of lighting, it also shows some stunning blues/darker purple. The drum looks great right out of the box, pro drumheads from Evans, with 2.3 triple flanged hoops providing some robust rigidity, just enough to feel solid under the sticks, but still allowing the drum to resonate. Whatever the strainer is (which Dixon simply calls ‘Flip Drop / Contemporary’ - I am a fan!
Full disclosure - I had to EQ the snare mic, cut about 2db or so @ 200Hz or so. There was a very annoying hum, more evident at lower tunings but enough to take away from the good freqs. A little bit of dampening also helped for a little bit of control, but otherwise the snare is lovely to play, at open tuning from medium/high and up. This is the type of drum I would never hesitate taking to a gig, or a studio session. Great job Dixon!
