Upland Consulting

Upland Consulting Upland is dedicated to helping regional business owners grow and succeed. We are business growth sp Business success calls for all three.

"Head, Heart and Bottom Line"™ is the Upland Consulting motto. If we are to build businesses that nourish our whole selves (not just feed our bank account), businesses that are worthy of the commitment we ask of ourselves, our clients, our suppliers, our staff - we must honour all three. Thinking, of course; our values and the relationships that bind us together, also. And if we’re not holding our

selves to a standard of bottom-line accountability, we’re not really in business. So: "Head, Heart and Bottom Line"™. When I decided, in 2011, to leave a steady job (again), and start a consulting business (again), I spent a lot of time thinking hard about what I wanted to offer the world, and what sort of clients I wanted to work with. "Head, Heart and Bottom Line"™ summarises what I care about, and is now the motto of Upland Consulting. All along the scale, from solo-preneur microbusinesses and startups to corporations, business owners need help to achieve growth. No one succeeds big-time, in business, the arts, sport or anything else, all on their own. Upland Consulting can help you with the tools of business growth: board of directors, advisory boards, individual mentoring, and the powerful Peer Magic™ peer-to-peer group advisory process. Also with family business issues, including succession.

🎯 Testimonial Tuesday

Strong boards don't simply oversee organisations — they help shape their future.

Effective governance creates clarity, accountability and confidence in decision-making. It creates the space to step back from day-to-day challenges and focus on what matters most.

The best boards ask better questions, have better conversations and make better decisions.

Helping boards do exactly that is some of the most rewarding work we do.

Ever feel like you're working harder than ever but not moving forward?

You're not alone.

Many business owners assume they need to work longer hours, solve more problems, or push their team harder.

But sometimes the answer isn't more effort.

It's a different perspective.

When you're deep in the day-to-day, it's easy to become trapped by the same challenges, conversations, and ways of thinking.

That's why taking a step back can be so powerful.

A fresh perspective often reveals opportunities that were there all along.

So here's a question for this week:

If you could look at your business from a helicopter view, what would you see differently?

I'd be interested in your thoughts.

Most businesses don’t get held back by a lack of ideas.

More often, it’s decisions that don’t quite turn into action.

You can see what needs to happen.
You’ve talked it through.
Everyone’s broadly on the same page.

But if no-one is clearly in a position to make the call and follow it through… things tend to slow down.

We see it a lot.

And when that authority is clear, things feel very different. Decisions lead to action. Action leads to progress.

Do you have that authority in your role?

That’s what we call one of the “Four Aces”.

At some point, every business owner realises:

You can’t do it all on your own.

You can get a long way on instinct and experience.
But eventually, having the right input around you makes a big difference.

Not just more opinions — but the right kind of advice.

People who can challenge your thinking, help you see clearly, and support better decisions.

The strongest businesses we see all have this in common.

Do you?

That’s the third of the “Four Aces” - Advice.

Lots of business owners have good ideas.

Fewer turn those ideas into action.

It’s not about having a perfect plan.

It’s about being willing to start, test things, and keep moving.

That’s often the difference.

The businesses that move forward aren’t always the smartest on paper — they’re the ones where the owner is prepared to take action.

Even when things aren’t completely clear.

Do you see that in yourself?

That’s the second of the “Four Aces” - Action.

Not every business owner wants to grow their business.

And that’s okay.

But if you’ve ever found yourself thinking,
“there’s more this business could be…”
—that’s something worth paying attention to.

That’s ambition.

Not about chasing size for the sake of it.

But wanting to build something better, more intentional, more aligned with what matters to you.

Most people already have it. It just hasn’t always been named.

Do you recognise that in yourself?

It’s the first of what we call the “Four Aces”.

Does everything in your business still run through you?

It often starts that way.

You build it. You make the decisions. You stay close to everything that matters.

But over time, that can become a bit of a constraint.

When every decision, every issue, every relationship comes back to you…
the business can only move as fast as you can.

That’s usually the point where things begin to feel harder than they should.

The interesting part is this — it’s not a people problem, and it’s not a market problem.

It’s how the business is set up.

And that can be changed.

For many owners, the next step is shifting from being the one who does the work…
to the one who builds how the work gets done.

That means trusting your people a bit more.
Putting some structure around how things run.
And letting go of a few things that don’t all need to sit with you.

It’s not always easy. But it’s where the next stage of growth comes from.

We’ll be talking more about this.

If it feels close to home, happy to have a chat.

Why did you really start your business?

Not the easy answer — the real one. The one that gets you up in the morning and makes the hard days worth it.

For some, it’s freedom. For others, legacy. For most, it’s a mix of challenge, contribution and the satisfaction of creating something truly your own.

In his latest piece, Iain explores what drives people to build their own livelihoods — and what keeps them going when things get tough. It’s a reminder that the “why” behind our work is what gives it meaning, direction and staying power.

Some people start a business to sack the boss.  Here in the regions, the labour market is not deep, and many people start a business to provide themselves with a job.  In my own case, I’ve found the lifelong urge to go out on my own was not just about escaping from spending my working […]

Most businesses don’t get stuck because they’re failing.

More often, they reach a point where what used to work doesn’t quite carry them forward anymore.

You’ve built the business on hard work, instinct, and getting things done. That’s exactly what it takes in the early stages.

But as things grow, the decisions get bigger. There’s more at stake. And it becomes harder to keep everything moving just by pushing a bit harder.

That’s usually the point where owners start to feel the strain.

Not because anything is broken — but because the business is asking for a different way of being led.

Do you recognise that in your own situation?

A shift in how you think about the business — stepping back, testing decisions, bringing in broader perspective — can make all the difference.

You don’t have to work it out on your own.

Ever feel like you’re working harder than ever… but not really moving forward?

That’s often the turning point in a business.

Not failure. Not crisis.
Just… stuck.

And the instinct? Work more. Push harder.

But here’s the shift we see all the time:

Growth doesn’t come from doing more of the same.
It comes from stepping back and rethinking the game.

New perspective.
Better conversations.
Clearer direction.

That’s where things start to move again.

If that resonates, you’re not alone — and there is a way forward.
