I think we’re entering a period where being good at following instructions becomes considerably less valuable. AI is very good at instructions.

What still matters is deciding what deserves to exist in the first place. Seeing an opportunity. Having an opinion.

Putting something into the world before you know whether it will work. Then being willing to listen when reality gives you the answer. Some of the most important decisions in my career started before I had certainty. They became clear because I moved, not because I thought about them for another six months.

That ability to act, learn and adjust is agency. And in an AI era, I think we’re going to need much more of it.

The conversation around AI is mostly about capability.

What can it write? What can it build? What jobs will it replace? What will it be able to do next year that it can’t do today? I think there’s a more useful question.

As intelligence and ex*****on become cheaper, what becomes more valuable about being human? I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about that question through business, investing, building companies, martial arts and sitting across from more than a thousand founders and leaders.

I keep coming back to six things. Not technical skills. Human ones.

And I think the people who deliberately develop them now will be considerably better placed for whatever comes next. I put the full framework into a free field guide called Future Proof.
