Tax season is well underway β and if you've lodged your return, your Notice of Assessment should be landing soon. Here's how to read it.
Your notice shows your taxable income, the tax calculated on that income, any credits already applied (like PAYG withheld or instalments paid), and the final result β whether you're getting a refund or owe more.
Refund β the ATO owes you money. Usually hits your bank within a few days of the notice.
Tax debt β you owe the ATO. The notice will show the due date. Don't ignore it β contact your tax agent if you can't pay in full, because payment plans are available.
Amendment or adjustment β means something changed from what was lodged. Check it carefully against your return.
The ATO generally processes online returns within two weeks, though some take longer.
If anything on your notice doesn't match what you expected β contact your registered tax agent before assuming it's wrong. Sometimes it's correct but confusing. Sometimes it needs to be amended.
