Doug Baird OAM losing travel funding to continue speaking about his son, Corporal Cameron Baird VC MG, is the wrong decision.

Doug’s work matters.

Not just to veterans, but to Australia.

For more than a decade he and his family have travelled the country sharing Cameron’s story. A story of courage, sacrifice, service, strength and mateship. The very values that helped shape this country.

These conversations matter because they remind Australians who we are at our best.

They unite people.

They remind young Australians that freedom, service and sacrifice are not abstract ideas. Real people carried that burden on behalf of the nation.

Of all the financial support our Federal Government provides, helping families like the Baird’s continue this work should be near the top of the list.

This funding should be immediately restored.

We Will Remember Them

The Veterans’ & Families’ Centre extends our deepest condolences following the tragic death of Warrant Officer Class Two Lachlan Muddle during a parachuting training incident on 11 May 2026.

Today, our thoughts are with his family, loved ones, mates, and the wider Special Air Service Regiment, Defence, and veteran community as they navigate this heartbreaking loss. We also hold the injured soldier and their loved ones in our thoughts and wish them strength and recovery in the days ahead.

Military service carries risks that many outside the community never fully see. Behind every uniform is a family, a team, and a network of people who carry the weight of service together. Losses like this are felt deeply across the entire veteran and Defence community.

At times like these, we are reminded of the courage, dedication and sacrifice shown not only on operations, but also during the demanding training required to serve our country.

From all of us at The Veterans’ & Families’ Centre, we stand beside our Defence and veteran community and send our heartfelt support to all those affected.

If this news has impacted you or someone you know, support is available through Open Arms – Veterans & Families Counselling on 1800 011 046 or through Lifeline on 13 11 14.

It’s a wrap on the 2026 Point & Shoot - Australian Veteran Photography Exhibition - and what an incredible journey it’s been.

A heartfelt thank you to all the venues and viewers who supported the exhibition. Your enthusiasm and engagement have helped bring these powerful veteran stories to life.

We are proud to showcase work that encourages reflection of the service and sacrifice of the men and women who have served our nation.

The journey doesn’t end here. We’re now seeking new venues and communities to host future exhibitions. If you are interested in bringing the Point & Shoot to your venue, organisation or town, we’d love to hear from you.

Let’s continue sharing these stories together.

We Will Remember Them.

It’s an image that’s been shared widely over the years. But it’s the story behind it that gives it real weight.

"Whilst conducting night patrols out of FOB Locke, we spent the late afternoons relaxing, playing cricket. The sledging was ruthless.

“Bowl him a hand grenade!”
“Watch out, it explodes off a good length here!”
“Mine-d your step!”

Unfortunately, Sean McCarthy the photographer of this image was killed in action and the bowler, our interpreter, lost his legs only hours after this photo was taken."

We will remember them

The ADF suffered casualties that were unprecedented at the time.

We constructed a small memorial where we would conduct ceremonies to commemorate those we lost. These were the only moments we could get due to the high tempo of operations.
Although brief they were very meaningful.

Last day tomorrow with the Point and Shoot at Maroochy RSL.

Friday 17 April - 12 to 6pm.

Photos like this are exactly why we think it’s important to share the story behind them.

It’s often not until you understand the story that you can truly appreciate the service and sacrifice.

Photo and story kindly shared by Sean O’Loughlin.

“Being a part of the Operational Mentoring and Liaison Team saw us living amongst the Afghan Soldiers and local population. We knew the locals by name and were often invited for chai. On this patrol, the kids caught fish in the river and had prepared a feast within the space of 20-30 minutes.

My mate Nathaniel Gallagher “Gal” can be seen in the back of the photo, enjoying the break on patrol. Gal would be KIA on his next deployment back to Afghanistan.”
