Big migration news out of Canberra.
On 17 September, Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke announced one of the biggest overhauls to Australia's visa system in years. The message is clear: fewer loopholes, more control.
Here's the short version 👇
🔹 Visitor visas are getting a "No Further Stay" condition — no more entering as a tourist and applying for another visa while you're here.
🔹 Chaining temporary visas together to stay long-term? Also getting harder.
🔹 Most Student and Graduate visa holders won't be able to bring partners or kids along as accompanying applicants.
🔹 2nd and 3rd year Working Holiday visas are moving toward a ballot — less guaranteed, more competitive.
🔹 Skilled migration is being redirected to where it's needed most: construction, agriculture, fisheries and teaching.
🔹 And compliance enforcement is ramping up across the board.
None of this kicks in overnight — a lot still needs regulations and admin changes before it's locked in. But the direction of travel is obvious.
If you're planning a move, extension, or sponsorship and want to know how this affects you specifically, reach out — happy to talk it through.

A beautiful review from a beautiful lady! She was having technical difficulty posting on Google, so she sent me a photo instead. I love helping people and feel lucky to work with some amazing clients. When we work with passion and remember that we're changing people's lives, it makes the work all the more worthwhile. ❤️

Employer-sponsored work visas are crucial for many Australian businesses right now.

But here's a mistake that trips up a lot of employers: meeting the minimum 482 visa salary threshold does NOT automatically mean you've met the salary requirement.

There's a second, less talked-about test — the Annual Market Salary Rate (AMSR).

Here's how it works 👇

Two thresholds apply, and you have to clear whichever is HIGHER:

1️⃣ The government's minimum — currently ~$79,423 for Core Skills roles, ~$146,576 for Specialist Skills roles (rising every July)

2️⃣ The actual market rate — what an Australian worker would genuinely earn for that same job, at that same company, in that same location

Example: if the government minimum is $79,423 but the market rate for that role in that city is $95,000 — you have to pay $95,000. The government figure is a floor, not a target.

How do you prove the market rate?
→ An existing Australian employee in the same role (best evidence)
→ Recent job ads for similar positions
→ Industry salary data or a relevant award/enterprise agreement

Guesswork doesn't cut it. Neither does overseas salary data.

3 things employers often miss:

✔️ Only guaranteed base salary counts — cars, housing, and shaky bonuses don't help you meet the threshold
✔️ It's not a set-and-forget check — if market pay rises after the visa is granted, you're expected to keep up
✔️ Scrutiny varies by industry — trades, healthcare and hospitality get checked against awards; office roles get compared to job ads and salary surveys

Getting this wrong isn't just a paperwork issue — it can mean a refused nomination or a compliance headache down the track.

If you're planning to sponsor talent, get the salary benchmarking right before you lodge.

Are you sure all three eligibility boxes actually line up?

Salary, occupation, and labour market testing can each look fine on their own. The problem starts when one piece supports the others on paper, but not in the visa rules.

That’s where avoidable refusals happen, because eligibility is assessed as one connected picture.

Swipe through to see how the three checks work together.

Book your eligibility check or document review today.

One strong factor won’t save a 482 application if all eligibility and genuineness pieces don’t line up.

Sponsor, occupation, relevant experience and genuineness all need to align before you lodge.

If the occupation description looks right in practice but the work history does not support it on paper, that is where refusals and delays start.

Before you submit, check the full fit first.

Your refusal letter is the first deadline.

Read it today, then check:
1. whether ART review is available
2. the filing window
3. the next step if review is not available

Miss the window, and the option can be gone permanently.

Paper review? Treat it like the hearing.

If your visa review is decided on the papers, every paragraph has to do the work. A strong submission proves the facts, addresses weak points, and guides the decision-maker from the start.
