🐍 A big thank you to Colac Otway Shire! 🐍

A huge thank you to Colac Otway Shire for putting up more warning signs around the lake and along the paths about snakes. 💚

With snake activity increasing as the weather warms up, these signs are a great reminder for everyone using the lake and walking paths to stay alert and give our Wildlife plenty of space.

🐍 What should you do if you encounter a snake?

• Stop and stay calm — don’t panic or make sudden movements.
• Keep your distance and never attempt to touch, chase or move the snake.
• Let the snake move away on its own. Give it a wide berth if you need to pass.
• Keep dogs on a lead and well away from the snake.
• Warn other people nearby so they can safely avoid the area.
• If you’re bitten, call 000 immediately, stay as still as possible and apply a pressure immobilisation bandage if available. Do not wash the bite, cut it, or try to suck out the venom.

Remember, snakes generally want to avoid us too. 🐍 Respect their space, stay aware and enjoy the lake!

Do not approach, touch or attempt to catch the snake.

Move children and pets indoors and keep the area clear.

🐍 SNAKE SEASON HAS BEGUN! 🐍

Snake season is well and truly here! We’ve already had 2 snake call-outs today — one in Swan Marsh and another in Beech Forest. 🌿🐍

As the weather warms up, snakes become more active, so now is the perfect time to make your property less inviting to them.

🏡 Tips to help reduce snakes around your property:
• Keep lawns short and gardens tidy
• Remove piles of timber, tin, rocks and other clutter
• Keep firewood stacked neatly and off the ground
• Clear long grass and weeds around sheds and outbuildings
• Keep areas around chicken coops and aviaries clean
• Reduce rodents — snakes are often attracted by an easy food source
• Keep rubbish and pet food securely stored
• Seal gaps under sheds, decks and buildings where possible
• Be extra cautious around long grass, wood piles and water sources

⚠️ If you see a snake, keep your distance and keep children and pets away. Never try to catch or kill it yourself.
