Congratulations to Jamin Farebrother achieving his first night solo in his turbo C210! Adapting to flying in the dark is a big step especially in the Territory where there is barely any lighting or horizon!

Jamin has worked incredibly hard to get up to standard so a huge achievement Jamin well done and let’s get the rest done now!

Congratulations to Geoffrey McDougall completing his examiner proficiency check. Geoffrey is an IFR examiner currently based on the East Coast and is available for testing and training for any flight school or operator looking for an experienced instructor and examiner, formally an instructor in the RAAF and flight school owner in WA. Plus he has all the training endorsements you could hope for!!

Congratulations to Darwin Flight Training’s own Scott Chapman completing his Grade 1 training endorsement over the last few weeks.

This is the highest grade of achievement for instructors delivering RPL through to CPL training and as such the knowledge base and proficiency must be demonstrated to the highest level.

Working with DFT HOO Pete Cunningham and training partner & examiner Trent Robinson, Scott was put through his paces and achieved a great result.

Congratulations Scott!!!

Holding off just a little bit of drift!

A crucial part of IFR flying, and NVFR for that matter, is allowing for wind.

We spend so much time teaching pilots how to intercept and establish on a track that it can be easy to forget what comes next: apply the drift required to actually maintain it and remain in tolerances.

In this case, we’re turning to intercept final approach with around 15° of drift required to compensate for the crosswind.

Intercept the track, establish, assess what the wind is doing, then adjust. Don’t just wait for the CDI to start moving before doing something about it.

And remember, the forecast wind gives you a starting point and changes with altitude so requires constant monitoring and adjustment. What the aircraft is actually doing tells you what you really need.

IF YOUR URINE LOOKS DARK YELLOW, YOU’RE NOT DRINKING ENOUGH WATER!

Darwin’s wet season is here, and for pilots, dehydration is a serious threat to both health and performance.

Fatigue, headaches, reduced concentration and impaired decision-making are just some of the consequences of dehydration. And over the longer term, repeated dehydration can contribute to kidney problems that may even affect your aviation medical.

You can’t expect peak performance from a dehydrated pilot! And no water in coffee doesn’t count!!

Whether you’re flying, instructing or working on the ground, carry plenty of water, drink regularly and don’t wait until you’re thirsty. Remember feeling thirsty is an indicator of you already being dehydrated!

As part of Scott from Darwin Flight Training ‘s grade one course is to show other aspects of aviation to give a better rounded exposure and aid his teaching. So why not get him on the tools!!!! Washing aeroplanes is all part of the process and why not do something special and wash a Mallard from Paspaley! Good to catch up with Daniel Bolton and 𝐆𝐁 who is also doing some casual instructing at DFT!
