🌬️🔩 Keeping Metters Windmills Turning…

There are still plenty of old Metters windmills standing across the Australian landscape — and just because the manufacturer or original parts network may be long gone, it doesn’t mean these old machines have reached the end of their working life. 🇦🇺🌾

Over time, Fetlock Windmills has continued to collect, salvage and sort original second-hand windmill components, and amongst that collection we have a growing range of Metters parts available.

Some are ready to go, while others can be inspected, cleaned, repaired or refurbished before returning to service. ♻️🔧

It’s something we believe is increasingly important.

As these older windmills become harder to find parts for, every usable component we can save gives another machine a chance to remain standing, turning and — most importantly — pumping water. 💧

Sometimes repairing an old windmill isn't about finding something brand new.

Sometimes it's about having the knowledge, the old parts and the willingness to keep what we've already got working.

⚙️🌬️ PUTTING THINGS INTO PERSPECTIVE…

Let’s look at it this way.

The all-steel windpump emerged in the late 1800s.

The petrol-powered automobile? Also the late 1800s. 🚗

Now think about what has happened since.

Look at the motor car today compared with those first automobiles. Engines, transmissions, electronics, computers, fuel injection, safety systems, sensors, electric vehicles — almost every part of the automobile has been redesigned, developed or completely reinvented.

Now look at the humble windmill. 🌾

A fan catches the wind.
⚙️ Gearing converts that rotation into mechanical movement.
⬆️ A pump rod rises and falls.
💧 A simple pump lifts water from below the ground.

More than a century later, the fundamental principle remains remarkably similar.

Why?

Because sometimes you get the engineering pretty bloody close to right the first time.

No electricity required.
No fuel required.
No computer required.

Just steel, wind, mechanical engineering and regular maintenance.

And perhaps the greatest testament to the design is that windmills built generations ago are still standing on Australian properties and still capable of pumping water today. 🇦🇺

Of course, materials have improved. Manufacturing has improved. Bearings, galvanizing and components have evolved.

But the fundamental machine?

It was already beautifully simple.

In a world constantly searching for the next complicated solution, there’s something pretty special about a machine designed more than a century ago that can still quietly turn a breeze into water.

One of the finest examples of simple mechanical engineering ever put to work.

And well worth keeping turning.

🌬️ You Never Know Where a Windmill May Be Hiding… 👀

That’s one of the things we love about doing what we do.

You can travel through a town, down an old country road, behind a shed or into the back corner of a property and suddenly there it is — another piece of Australia’s windmill history quietly hiding away. 🌾🇦🇺

Some are still pumping water exactly as they have for decades. Others have been standing idle for years, waiting for someone to give them a little attention and get them turning again.

Then there are the ones you find in places you’d never expect!

Every windmill has a story. Some have watered generations of livestock, some have supplied homes and gardens, and others have simply become part of the landscape around them. 💧

It’s one of the reasons we enjoy getting out and travelling this country so much — you genuinely never know what you’re going to find around the next corner.

🎡🌾 That’s a Wrap on the 2026 EKKA! 🇦🇺🌬️

For the third year running, Fetlock Windmills has had the privilege of being part of the EKKA — and once again, we’re incredibly proud to have played our small part in such an iconic Queensland event.

The EKKA brings the city and the country together in a way that few events can. It celebrates agriculture, regional communities, Australian businesses and the people who continue to keep our rural industries moving forward. 🚜🐄🌾

For us, having windmills standing amongst it all is something pretty special.

These machines have been part of the Australian landscape for generations, quietly pumping water and supporting properties across the country. Being able to showcase that history, while also showing that the windmill still has an important place in Australia's future, is something we're genuinely proud of. 💨💧

A huge thank you to everyone involved with the EKKA for once again giving Fetlock Windmills the opportunity to be part of it.

Three years down, plenty of great memories made, and we're already looking forward to doing it all again.

Some of the windmills we work on have already been pumping water longer than many of us have been alive. 🌾

And that's one of the things we love about them.

The windmill was not designed to become obsolete- simply because it got old. They were designed to be maintained, repaired and rebuilt. 🔩⚙️

That's also why we've put so much effort into collecting original second-hand parts, refurbishing what can be saved, and beginning to manufacture replacement components where good originals are becoming difficult to find.

Sometimes keeping an old windmill running means a service.

Sometimes it means finding that obscure component that's been unavailable for years.

And sometimes it means taking something worn or broken and working out how to make it serviceable for another generation. ♻️💧

There's an enormous amount of Australian engineering history still standing in paddocks around this country.

We reckon it's worth looking after.

🌬️ This is what keeping Australia's windmills turning looks like.

From the ground they can look incredibly simple.

Climb a little closer and there's an entire mechanical system working together — fan, gearing, bearings, linkages, pump rod and finally the pump below, converting nothing more than the wind passing through the paddock into water. ⚙️➡️💧

And that's why we enjoy showing more of the work behind them.

Not just the finished windmill spinning in the breeze, but the servicing, repairs, old parts, engineering and knowledge required to keep these machines doing what they've done for generations.

No electricity.
No fuel.
Just good mechanical engineering, properly maintained. 🇦🇺🌾

A windmill service should tell you more than what colour the old oil was. 🌬️🔧

When we climb a windmill, we’re looking at the machine as a complete working system.

We’re watching how it runs, listening for noises that shouldn’t be there, checking movement and wear through the head, looking over the tower and pump rod on the way up, and inspecting the components responsible for turning that breeze into a reliable stroke at the pump. ⚙️💧

Oil is incredibly important — but it’s only one part of the story.

The real value of preventative servicing is finding the little things before they become big things. A worn component caught today may be a relatively straightforward repair. Left until something lets go, that same wear can damage other components and leave the windmill standing idle.

These machines were built to work for a very long time.

Our job is to understand what they're telling us and help keep them that way. 🌾🇦🇺

🌬️ Keeping Another Southern Cross Turning

There's something satisfying about seeing an old windmill kept in service rather than replaced.

This week we had the opportunity to replace a damaged blade on this 25' Southern Cross R Pattern with one of our newly manufactured replacement blades. It's always rewarding seeing these iconic machines restored to working order and ready to face another season in the paddock. Although this one is ornamental- it is pump ready at any time.

As more of these classic windmills continue to age, quality replacement parts are becoming increasingly important. That's why we're proud to now offer Australian-manufactured replacement blades for Southern Cross R Pattern windmills in a range of sizes.

🌬️ There's something special about a windmill in motion...

For many people, it's just another piece of machinery standing in the paddock.

For us, it's decades of Australian engineering doing exactly what it was designed to do.

Every turn of the fan, every stroke of the pump rod, every drop of water lifted from below the ground is a reminder that simple, well-built machinery still has an important place on Australian properties.

It's why we're so passionate about servicing, rebuilding and preserving these incredible machines.

There's something satisfying about watching a windmill quietly go about its work—no noise, no fuel, no electricity... just the wind turning into water.
