I didn't leave the Army broken.

But I didn't leave whole either.

After 8/9 RAR and a deployment to Afghanistan in 2012, I came home to a world that felt like it was moving too fast and I didn't know how to slow down, or who to ask for help.

I started Life After Defence because I didn't want another veteran to feel as lost as I did.

This community is built on that foundation.

May is almost done.

Thank you to everyone who's engaged, shared, commented, and reached out this month.

This community is why we do this.

If you're newer here, welcome. We're glad you found us.

June is going to be a big month. Stay tuned.

By that measure, Australia still has work to do.

Too many veterans are navigating DVA claims alone. Too many are leaving service without knowing what they're entitled to. Too many are struggling in silence because the system is too complex and nobody handed them a roadmap.

That's not good enough. And it's exactly why Life After Defence exists.

If you or someone you know is struggling to navigate life after service, we're here.

As we stand at the Dawn Service this morning, we acknowledge all who have served our country.

Those who gave everything.
Those who returned changed.
And those who continue carrying the impact of their service every day.

We know ANZAC Day can bring pride, reflection, and sometimes difficult memories for veterans and families. If today feels heavy, please remember you are not alone, we stand with you.

Lest we forget. 🇦🇺

Many veterans worry that making a claim could affect their employment after Defence.

It’s one of the most common misconceptions we hear.

DVA claims exist to support service-related conditions and are confidential.

Understanding your entitlements helps you make informed decisions about your transition.

Life After Defence started with one simple idea.

Veterans shouldn’t have to fight another battle after leaving service.
Trent served with 8/9 RAR and saw firsthand how confusing the transition process could be especially when it came to claims, paperwork and understanding what support exists.
That’s why LAD exists today.

If you're unsure where to start after leaving Defence, you're not alone.

Why Claims Stall (And How to Reduce Delays)
DVA claims don’t usually stall for one big reason.

It’s often small things:
– missing evidence
– unclear service links
– incomplete forms
– documents submitted too late

Most delays are preventable with the right preparation.

Doing it properly the first time matters more than doing it quickly.

Too often, veterans wait until things get serious before reaching out, hoping the problem will just go away. The truth is, early support can make a massive difference, both physically and mentally.

Getting advice sooner can:
Prevent small issues from becoming bigger problems
Make claims and paperwork easier to manage
Give you clarity about what support you’re entitled to
Reduce stress on you and your family

Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness. It’s taking responsibility for your health and wellbeing, something you’ve done throughout service, and deserve to continue doing afterwards.
