Not everyone on your team needs access to every part of your business finances.

And as your business grows, it's worth making sure each person has the right level of access for their role.

Xero has introduced more targeted permissions in areas like banking, reporting and inventory, giving businesses more control over who can access certain information and perform specific tasks.

Here's a little reminder to review your settings:

🏦 Banking: Check who can access your bank balances and transactions.

📊 Reporting: Review who can view your financial reports and other business information.

📦 Inventory: Check who can view or make changes to your stock.

The available options depend on the user's role and the permissions supported by Xero, so it's worth having a look at your own organisation's settings.

It's a small admin task that can make a difference in keeping your business information accessible to the right people.

You don’t have to wait until your bookkeeping is months behind to start getting things under control.

Sometimes, it’s the little things you do consistently that make keeping your books up to date so much easier.

A few habits I recommend:

→ 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞.

→ 𝐒𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐠𝐨.

You don’t necessarily have to spend hours every day doing your bookkeeping. But having a regular routine for reviewing transactions, keeping records and following up on anything unclear can help prevent a small backlog from becoming a BIG one.

And remember, good bookkeeping isn’t about being perfect.

It’s about having a system that works for 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 — and keeping up with it consistently.

Here are a few quick wins to check off:

✔️ 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐛𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 and follow up on outstanding payments. Getting paid on time can make a big difference to your cash flow.

✔️ 𝐆𝐨𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐮𝐧𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐝? Don’t simply delete or cancel them. If a genuine debt is written off as bad, you may be able to claim a GST adjustment if you meet the ATO’s requirements. The rules can differ depending on your GST accounting method.

✔️ 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐮𝐛𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬. Are they still adding value to your business? Cancel the ones you no longer need and put those savings back where they matter.
