🌴 Happy National Tree Day! 🌴

Today, we celebrate the incredible impact trees have on our environment and communities. Trees help to lower the temperature in cities, reduce carbon emissions, and provide clean air - and also improve our wellbeing when we get out and appreciate them in nature.

Busting some energy myths: The majority of QLD's land clearing is for grazing, forestry and mines. NOT renewable energy transition projects. An energy transition can be positive for nature and communities, but we have to revolutionise how development is planned and assessed in QLD. See the five point plan (in comments)

"A view of parking from the driver’s seat has underpinned the century-old “me, here and now” parking narrative. That narrative overlooks the wider social, environmental, and economic impacts of parking policy. This narrow view has been used to justify parking as a public good and to then justify the extensive public subsidies that provide cheap, easy parking to attract drivers to damaged places that are not worth visiting."

"Looking forward, creating more equitable, efficient, attractive, and successful places requires that we rethink parking. Rational parking policies that tap the potential of smart, new parking technologies and mobility sharing economies can take us to a better place. In the end, we can find that better balance, one that puts parking on tap, not on top."

Parking shapes every element of the urban environment, often to the detriment of a place. Why do we subsidize public parking as a public good, and how can we move forward?

Six Cities Discussion Paper out today

Only days after announcing the Coast has a City Commissioner, the Six Cities Commission has released its Discussion Paper.

The paper reveals the vision for the six cities from Newcastle to Nowra via Sydney and the Central Coast - and you are invited to tell the NSW Government what you think of it.

The paper is only 68 pages - with lots of full page photos.

And with new word pictures like “future-facing areas”.

The vision includes "six region shapers" - which is another way of saying six ideas.

And a 20 year time frame for these six ideas to take shape.

Basically these six ideas can be summarised like this.

1/ We're going to plan with first nations people.

2/ We're going to plan fast rail and fast internet for all six areas.

3/ We're going to plan more housing.

4/ We're going to plan so residents can do stuff in their own areas without needing a car.

5/ We're going to plan more jobs in the areas with a lot more buzzwords than before like knowledge-intensive, ecosystems and innovation hubs.

6/ We're going to plan climate action.
“Heat is a major problem across the cities, with local communities experiencing excessive temperatures during heatwaves,” the report tells us.

At the end of the discussion period, there will be a whole lot of plans.

“Together these plans will cover the essentials needed to deliver quality of life, whatever level of government people interact with,” the blurb says.

“Coordination is easier if everyone has the same priorities.

“To this end, the Commission will work with delivery agencies to embed the priorities and targets set out in the Region and City Plans in their key deliverables.”

Got that?
