Your skin barrier and how you are damaging it

Our skin is the largest organ in our body, yet we neglect it like it's that nail polish you bought once and instantly regret.

So heres a few key things about your skin barrier and how you can better look after it:

1. It's almost criminal to not exfoliate at least 2-3 times a week - As we age, our skins ability to shed dead skin slows down leaving this dirty, damaged barrier of moldy cells

2. Exposing our skin to UV exposure and free radicals increases the breakdown of your collagen - you are letting some nasty human get a jack hammer to the house of your skin, except that human is you

3. cleansing with micellar water is literally locking in the dirt you have had accumulate during the day - It's gross and all you really need is a gentle cleanser

RETINOL - the anti ageing product I swear by... but what does it do?

1. Has the ability to repair the damage DNA of your skin cell (think of a more healthy, structured brick wall just built)

2. Increases skin cell turnover, those dry, dull, crumbly bricks end up staying for much longer than they should - your retinol helps to get rid of them for healthier cells to sit on the surface of your skin

3. A MUST for acne prone skin - contributing to regulating the oil production your body produces - positively impacting congestion and pore size

Start with a cosmeceutical grade retinol and eventually work your way up to a tretinoin IF you need it :)

Function Season is in full swing!

Here are 3 things I would do to get my skin function ready

1. Exfoliate with an AHA (Glycolic or Lactic acid) or BHA (salicylic acid) at least 3 times per week

2. Have any skin treatments like chemical peels or micro needling done at least 2-4 weeks prior to your function (if you're preparing for a wedding, this needs to be a treatment plan over the course of 6 months at least)

3. ALWAYS wear SPF to prevent unwanted pigmentation and accelerated ageing

Key Benefits of Topical Vitamin C

Many believe the products sold to you at your appointment might just be to increase sales - and to be fair, some therapists are like that. You're not wrong. If your therapist cannot educate you on the why behind their recommendation - massive 🔴 (aparrently facebook doesn't do red flags...)

There are several products I will always recommend someone starting from scratch, vitamin C being one of them. Why?

1. A natural antioxidant 🍊 - think about an umbrella that to some degree protects your skin cells from outside damage like UV, free radicals and pollution

2. Tyrosinase Inhibitor 🧘‍♂️- Big word huh... simply put, your tyrosine is what contributes to our pigmentation or freckles. Vitamin C tries to keep that enzyme calm and does not let it get excited when exposed to UV

3. I toss up on the best third benefit because there are two. The first being that while the vitamin C keeps your pigment enzymes calm, it also contributes to the lightening of your pigmentation, the second - vitamin c is great to facilitate in overall collagen production

The first step is to apply your vitamin C daily and in the morning.

Hyaluronic acid 🌻 Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a clear substance naturally produced by your body. It has a unique ability to hold in water keeping your skin moist and hydrated. HA also plays a role in protecting your skin from UV rays preventing sun damage. HA is mainly known to increase the moisture in your skin and therefore reducing fine lines and wrinkles whilst also plumping your skin to appear less saggy and more toned 🌻< this product also contains vitamin B5, take a look at our last post for more information on B vitamins 🤗
