Beyond the Snapshot: Optimizing Biosecurity with Biomarkers 🌡️

A single re**al temperature is a vital clinical snapshot, but relying solely on static pyrexia can create windows of vulnerability during peak respiratory season.

We know the challenges of transient fevers, horses masked by NSAIDs, or atypical presentations in partially immune animals where pyrexia is blunted or absent. If a horse shows subtle symptoms such as a minor drop in trackwork performance, mild lethargy, or early respiratory changes, a normal temperature shouldn't lower your guard.

Where does Serial SAA fit into the ambulatory biosecurity workflow?

While immediate isolation of any clinically suspect horse remains the baseline defense, identifying true systemic involvement early is critical. Serum Amyloid A (SAA) provides a highly sensitive, real-time window into the hepatic acute-phase response, rising within 6–12 hours of systemic inflammatory stimulus.

By implementing a serial testing protocol (at initial presentation and again 24–48 hours later), clinicians can objectify the trajectory of inflammation:

• A rapidly rising SAA confirms active, systemic inflammation, reinforcing the need for stringent isolation and justifying immediate diagnostic qPCR.

• A static, normal SAA tells us the inflammation isn't systemic, but remember it does not rule out localized upper respiratory shedding. It serves as a tool for risk stratification, not a green light to abandon isolation.

SAA doesn't replace the thermometer or the nasopharyngeal swab; it bridges the gap between clinical suspicion and objective data.

Is your clinic relying solely on baseline fasting insulin or a horse's physical appearance to screen for insulin dysregulation (ID)?

A new prospective study on 180 sport horses might change your protocol. Published in the Equine Veterinary Journal, researchers found that nearly 23% of sport horses suffered from ID and a staggering 74% of those cases could only be caught using dynamic oral sugar testing (OST). Physical appearance didn't predict risk, proving that fit performance horses are just as vulnerable.
