World Mental Health Day is a significant day dedicated to raising awareness about mental health and its importance. It is observed on October 10th every year but the message should resonate with us every day. Taking care of our mental health is essential for our overall well-being as well as the well-being of our children. We must prioritise our mental health throughout the year not just on this designated day. By working together we can break the stigma surrounding mental health and create a more empathetic and inclusive society.

Have you heard of Hospital in the Home (HITH)? 🏡

It's a great option for patients who need medical treatment, but don't want a long hospital stay.

HITH allows patients to continue their treatment from the comfort of their own home, which helps their recovery. It also helps reduce hospital admissions and lessen the pressure on hospitals, by freeing up beds for more critically ill people.

Medical, nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy, mental health and social work are all services that can be accessed. Patients are classed as a hospital admission, and clinicians can see them in person or via a phone or video call, depending on the condition being treated.

Some of the conditions that can be managed via HITH include:
👉 skin inflammations
👉 blood clots in the legs or lungs
👉 pneumonia and severe chest infections
👉 urinary tract infections.

To access HITH, patients need to be medically stable, have a fixed address, a working phone, and a safe home environment.

Want to know how to live longer? Don't we all! 😁

There's no magic fountain of youth (that we're aware of). But, there are things you can do to stay healthy and live your life to the fullest. 💪

Eating a balanced diet and exercising are key to staying healthy. You can also have a yearly general health check. 🗓️

Health checks are important for people of any age. They help pick up things early that could affect your physical and mental health.

For some, you'll need to visit your GP. For others, you can see a pharmacist or a dedicated clinic (such as a breast screening clinic).

So here's a reminder to book in today for a check-up with your healthcare provider. 😉

Regular bowel screening really does save lives! ✅

Don't wait until you see blood in your poo or have changes in bowel habits. Bowel screening will catch any changes before they can affect your health.

​Your chance of getting bowel cancer increases with age. That's why a home screening test kit will be mailed to you every 2 years from when you turn 50 until you're 74.

When the test arrives, please don't throw it in the bin or put it in a drawer! Do the test in the comfort of your home as soon as you get it, and then send it back in the reply-paid envelope supplied. Most people find it much easier and cleaner than they had expected. 😄

Don't wait for the test to arrive if you have a family history of bowel cancer or are experiencing any symptoms — talk to your healthcare provider.

In ancient Greece, women were forbidden to study medicine for several years until someone broke the law. Born in 300 BCE, Agnodice cut her hair and entered Alexandria medical school dressed as a man. While walking the streets of Athens after completing her medical education, she heard the cries of a woman in labour. However, the woman did not want Agnodice to touch her although she was in severe pain, because she thought Agnodice was a man. Agnodice proved that she was a woman by removing her clothes without anyone seeing and helped the woman deliver her baby.
The story would soon spread among the women and all the women who were sick began to go to Agnodice. The male doctors grew envious and accused Agnodice, whom they thought was male, of seducing female patients. At her trial, Agnodice, stood before the court and proved that she was a woman but this time, she was sentenced to death for studying medicine and practicing medicine as a woman.
Women revolted at the sentence, especially the wives of the judges who had given the death penalty. Some said that if Agnodice was killed, they would go to their deaths with her. Unable to withstand the pressures of their wives and other women, the judges lifted Agnodice's sentence, and from then on, women were allowed to practice medicine, provided they only looked after women.
Thus, Agnodice made her mark in history as the first Greek female doctor, physician and gynecologist. This plaque depicting Agnodice at work was excavated at Ostia, Italy.

Did you know a sore throat or skin sores can make your heart sick? 🤒

Germs called Strep A (Group A Streptococcus) infect your body through a sore throat and skin sores. This can cause acute rheumatic fever (ARF) that can damage your heart and lead to rheumatic heart disease (RHD). 🫀

1 in 2 Australians with ARF end up with RHD. That could be your aunty, an elder or even your baby.

If you've had a sore throat or skin sores, keep safe by having a yarn with your local doctor or nurse.
