💳 **Important Update – Merchant Fees & Card Payments**

From **1 October 2026**, Australian businesses can no longer pass on card payment surcharges to customers for eftpos, Visa and Mastercard payments.

**What does this mean for your business?**

âś… Your business will now need to absorb merchant processing fees.

âś… Customers will pay the advertised price without an additional card surcharge.

âś… Merchant settlements may be deposited into your bank account **less processing fees**, depending on your provider.

âś… Reconciling customer invoices in Xero may require some changes, particularly when multiple payments are received in one settlement.

đź’ˇ **Our tip:** Check how your EFTPOS or merchant provider is processing fees and make sure you can access detailed settlement reports.

🧹 Bookkeeping Tip: Don't Let Suspense Accounts Become a Dumping Ground

One of the last things I check before handing a client's file over to their accountant is the Suspense Account.

Think of it as the "I'll figure it out later" account.

Sometimes a transaction ends up there because:

A bank feed didn't match correctly.
A payment couldn't be identified.
An import created an unknown entry.
A journal didn't balance properly.

By year end, it's easy for a suspense account to contain hundreds—or even thousands—of dollars that shouldn't be there.

âś… Before sending your file to your accountant:

Review the Suspense Account balance.
Investigate every transaction.
Reallocate each item to the correct account where possible.
Aim for a nil balance.

Your accountant will thank you, and you'll likely save them time (and potentially reduce your accounting bill).
đź’ˇ Pro Tip: If your Suspense Account isn't zero, ask yourself:
"Do I actually know what this money relates to?"
If the answer is no, it's worth investigating before year end.

💰 Don’t forget your Super Guarantee!

The June quarter super contributions are due by 28 July.

To avoid penalties, make sure your employees’ super is received by their super funds before the due date. If you’re using a clearing house, it’s a good idea to process payments several business days early.

Leaving it until the last minute can result in late payments and additional reporting requirements.

📢 Reminder for Employers – STP Finalisation is due by 14 July!

If you have employees, don’t forget to finalise your Single Touch Payroll (STP) in Xero or your payroll software by 14 July.

Finalising STP tells the ATO that your payroll information for the financial year is complete. Once it’s done, your employees can access their Income Statement through their myGov account and lodge their tax returns.

Before you click “Finalise”, it’s worth checking:
âś… Payroll Activity Summary matches your payroll reports
âś… Wages reconcile with your Profit & Loss
âś… Super and PAYG have been reviewed
âś… Any EOFY payroll adjustments have been processed

Taking a few extra minutes now can help avoid headaches later.
