MISSING: THE BEAUMONT CHILDREN

SIXTY YEARS LATER, HAS THIS LEAD EVER BEEN CHECKED?

On 26 January 1966, Jane Beaumont, 9, Arnna Beaumont, 7, and Grant Beaumont, 4, disappeared after travelling to Glenelg Beach. Witnesses reported seeing the children with an unidentified tall man who had a thin face and short, fair or blond hair. A police identi-sketch was produced, but the children have never been found.

Decades later, Andrew William Dawson-Ryan—a former Church of England Boys’ Society youth leader at Plympton, South Australia—was identified publicly as being from Cumberland Park. In 2009, he was sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment for sexually abusing boys entrusted to his care during the 1970s and 1980s. Many offences occurred in connection with youth camps, and one was believed to have occurred interstate.

A citizen researcher believes Dawson-Ryan’s appearance warrants comparison with the Beaumont identi-sketch and that his background, locations and movements deserve a documented police review.

A resemblance is not evidence of involvement. Dawson-Ryan has not been publicly identified by police as a suspect, and no publicly available evidence links him to the children’s disappearance.

The question is not: “Is this man guilty?”

The question is: “Was he ever formally examined, interviewed and eliminated from the investigation?”

There appears to be no publicly available answer.

Anyone with first-hand information about Dawson-Ryan’s residence, vehicles, movements, associates or CEBS activities around January 1966 should provide it directly to South Australia Police or Crime Stoppers—not confront or harass any individual.

Jane, Arnna and Grant still deserve answers.

🔴 MR CRUEL

WHAT IS ACTUALLY KNOWN ABOUT THE OFFENDER?

The following offender profile has been compiled from publicly available police information, witness accounts and the FBI’s investigative profile.

It does not identify or accuse any particular person.

Some descriptions conflict because the offender concealed his face, altered his appearance and kept witnesses blindfolded.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

• Adult Caucasian Australian male.
• Estimated age varied from his mid-20s to approximately 50.
• Estimated height: 170–183 cm.
• Most commonly reported range: 173–180 cm.
• Slim-to-medium build.
• Slightly protruding stomach or small “beer belly.”
• Solid or stocky arms.
• Hair described as fair, sandy, brown or greyish-brown.
• Light-coloured or bushy eyebrows.
• Sometimes unshaven, with whiskers, several days’ growth or a developing moustache or beard.
• Fine hair on his chest and arms.
• Probably right-handed.
• Short fingernails.
• Generally clean, without noticeable cigarette, alcohol or body odour.
• Musty-smelling breath was reported during one offence.

VOICE AND LANGUAGE

• Australian accent or no noticeable foreign accent.
• Fluent English.
• Sometimes described as well spoken.
• Other witnesses described a deep, gruff and apparently less-educated voice.
• He may have deliberately changed the way he spoke.

Reported expressions included:

• “Bozo”
• “Missy”
• “Worry wart”
• “Yous”
• Questions about whether someone felt brave
• Warnings not to “be a hero”

These expressions are clues—but none is unique enough to identify someone by itself.

MASK AND CLOTHING

• Regularly wore a dark balaclava.
• At least one mask had carefully stitched light-coloured edging around the eye and mouth openings.
• The stitching was described as white or cream, possibly with some red stitching.
• Another mask was navy blue and open-faced, with additional material covering the eye area.
• Frequently wore surgical, rubber or dishwashing-style gloves.

Clothing included:

• Dark full-length overalls or boiler suit
• Brown tweed sports jacket
• Blue waterproof zip-up jacket
• Close-fitting blue jeans
• Blue runners with white markings and white soles
• White socks

His clothing may have been deliberately selected to suggest different occupations and confuse witnesses.

BEHAVIOUR

• Calm, patient, methodical and highly controlling.
• Capable of controlling several adults and children simultaneously.
• Conducted surveillance before attacking.
• Appeared to know family routines, bedroom locations, telephone positions, entry points and escape routes.
• Could wait outside a property for hours before entering.
• Remained inside homes for extended periods without appearing rushed.
• Used threats against family members to force compliance.
• Alternated serious threats with false reassurance.
• Created false motives such as robbery or ransom.
• Pretended to communicate with accomplices.
• Pretended to make telephone calls.
• Claimed his vehicle was stolen.
• Followed newspaper and television coverage of his crimes.
• Appeared to enjoy misleading investigators.
• Planned activities and release times in advance.
• Occasionally became nervous when his vehicle would not start or when selecting a release location.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

• Skilled and experienced at breaking into homes.
• Quietly removed window glass.
• Forced open wind-out windows.
• Used paper to retrieve a key pushed from inside a locked door.
• Cut or disabled telephone lines.
• Carried housebreaking and restraint equipment.
• Competently used handcuffs, wire, nylon cord and adhesive tape.
• Could tie effective knots while wearing gloves.
• Confidently used knives and handguns to control groups.
• Familiar with Melbourne’s eastern, northern and north-western suburbs.
• Selected secluded parking, vehicle-transfer and release locations.

His behaviour suggests previous burglary, armed robbery, home-invasion or tactical experience.

It does not prove one particular occupation.

FORENSIC AWARENESS

• Covered his face and wore gloves.
• Used medical-style cotton eye pads and surgical tape.
• Repeatedly washed victims.
• Made victims brush their teeth.
• Cleaned sinks, benches and touched surfaces.
• Collected broken window glass.
• Changed or covered clothing before releasing victims.
• Used sheets or garbage bags to prevent trace transfer.
• Used a sheet on the floor to prevent footprints or other evidence.
• Understood that doctors and police would search for forensic evidence.
• Left extremely little publicly known physical evidence.

His precautions demonstrate exceptional forensic awareness.

They do not prove that he was a police officer, doctor, scientist or forensic worker.

EQUIPMENT

• Small dark pistol-style handgun
• Long kitchen or carving knife
• Handcuffs
• Red-and-white nylon cord
• Copper or galvanised wire
• Electrical tape in several colours
• Elastoplast or surgical tape
• Cotton eye pads
• Torch
• Pliers and housebreaking tools
• Carrying bags
• Portable radio
• Wooden tripod and camera

Police believed he may have photographed or filmed his crimes, although no recording has been publicly recovered.

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION

• Four-door car
• Bucket seats
• Floor-mounted gear lever
• Raised transmission hump
• Low glove box
• Cream-coloured carpet and interior door fittings
• Cream armrest and push-down door locks
• Clean-smelling interior
• Mechanically old or rough
• Difficult to start

A white Holden Commodore Vacationer with blue side stripes was seen acting suspiciously near one location.

It has never been officially confirmed as the offender’s vehicle.

PROPERTY ACCESS

The offender apparently had access to a quiet suburban dwelling featuring:

• Driveway on the right-hand side
• Concrete driveway
• Step at the entrance
• Double bed
• Peach or cream bedroom furnishings
• Radio in the bedroom
• Wooden tripod and camera near the bed
• Unusual bathroom configuration
• Separate adjoining toilet
• Limited traffic, tram, train or neighbourhood noise
• Repeated low aircraft noise

Police believed the premises was beneath or near a Melbourne Airport flight path.

No address has ever been officially identified.

LIFESTYLE INDICATORS

• Had the freedom to disappear for approximately 50 hours.
• Slept until about 10 am on a weekday.
• Could conduct prolonged surveillance without attracting attention.
• Was apparently not expected at regular employment during some weekday periods.
• May have controlled his working hours.
• May have had access to a property while its normal occupants were absent.
• Offending frequently occurred during or near school-holiday periods, although the pattern was not exact.
• May have had a partner or family who were absent during the offences.
• May have appeared respectable, reliable and trustworthy publicly.

FBI INVESTIGATIVE PROFILE

The FBI suggested that the offender might have been:

• Outwardly functional and steadily employed
• Quiet, polite and somewhat introverted
• Considered a good neighbour
• Involved in community activities
• Working in, around or regularly visiting schools
• Seen as unusually committed to children or students
• Recognised or awarded for educational or community work
• Secretly interested in school uniforms and child exploitation material
• Keeping photographs, recordings or stolen property
• In a relationship with someone aware of aspects of his sexual interests

People close to him may have noticed changes around the time of the offences, including:

• Unexplained absences
• Missing work
• Appearing distracted or preoccupied
• Uncharacteristic drinking
• Increased interest in religion
• Sudden changes in routine or behaviour

These were investigative theories—not proven facts.

WHAT REMAINS UNKNOWN

• His identity
• Exact age
• Exact height
• Natural hair colour
• Occupation
• Home address
• Address of the detention premises
• Confirmed vehicle
• Whether usable offender DNA survives
• Full number of crimes committed
• Whether he acted completely alone
• Whether he is still alive

Someone may remember a man who disappeared at unusual times, had access to a quiet property affected by aircraft noise, drove an unreliable four-door car with a cream interior, owned camera equipment or suddenly possessed distinctive stolen property.

One apparently insignificant memory could still provide the missing piece.
