Another woman has lost her life.

Yesterday, a woman was found fatally injured inside a home in Ferntree Gully, Victoria. A 45-year-old man who police say was known to her was arrested nearby, and the circumstances of her death are now being investigated by Homicide Squad detectives.

At this stage, we do not know enough to call this a domestic and family violence death, and we should not presume the circumstances before they are established.

But we do know that another woman is dead.

Australian Femicide Watch has already documented a devastating number of Australian women killed by violence this year. Behind every statistic is a woman with a name, a family, friends, plans and a life that mattered.

We cannot allow the frequency of these deaths to make them seem normal.

She mattered. They all matter.

Emergency services were called to the residence on Ferntree Gully Road just before 10am on 21 August and located an injured woman.

Women, children or anyone escaping violence have a right to be safe where they live. Previously, perpetrators who were still listed on a lease could argue they had a legal right to enter a property, even after moving out.

Under the new reform, they can now be prosecuted for breaking and entering if they return to threaten, intimidate or harm someone living there. The changes strengthen protections for people continuing to live in homes previously shared with the perpetrator.

The Government will go to any length to cut the NDIS funding of individuals. This treatment of the disabled needs to stop.

There are two different situations here that do not affect each other.

1. Compensation from abuse by the church.

2. A disability.

Dane Waites, a man with severe intellectual disability, autism and bipolar disorder, received compensation from the Catholic Church for historical sexual abuse he suffered as a child. The NDIA then cut his NDIS funding by $50,000 over two years, arguing the payout overlapped with support costs. Dane and his 83-year-old mother are challenging the decision, saying the compensation recognised abuse, not disability support needs.

Poor mental health and social exclusion have risen yet the government are giving NDIS an overhaul at the expense of those it was designed to help.

Disabled individuals, regardless of disability or its level, deserve equality, compassion and support.

The system definitely needs an overhaul as, like most government systems, it is broken but not at the expense of those it is aimed at helping.

The government can do better.

A new report looks at poverty and deprivation across the country since 2010. Disadvantage is becoming more entrenched and severe.
