Thanks for the welcome, South Australian Space Industry Centre ✨🇦🇺

Feels like only yesterday we were in Adelaide for IAC 2017, when the Government announced its momentous decision to establish the Australian Space Agency!

So much has happened since, and looking around the Space & Defence Landing Pad here at Lot Fourteen, it's clear there's a lot more ahead... 🧑🏻‍🚀 📡 🛰️ 🚀

🚀 South Australia just scored some stellar new space talent 🫢

We’re excited to welcome Gilmour Space Technologies to our Defence and Space Landing Pad at Lot Fourteen 👏

Matthew Congedi, Head of Mission Management at Gilmour, will be based at the Landing Pad – representing the team on the ground and collaborating with like minded businesses, world leading researchers and the Australian Space Agency.

The company’s arrival strengthens the state’s growing reputation as the place where space companies come to launch their next phase of growth.

This International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we shine a light on some amazing women at Gilmour Space who are helping build Australia’s sovereign space capability.

, space enables technologies that impact everyday life here on Earth, e.g.,
💳 Financial payments powered by precise satellite timing
📍 GPS navigation that gets you where you need to go
🌍 Environmental monitoring to better understand and protect our planet
🌾 Agriculture supported by satellite data and precision farming
🛡️ Defence capabilities that strengthen national security
📡 Satellite broadcasts & communications that keep communities connected

To every woman and girl curious about — science, technology, engineering and maths — there is a place for you in space. The future is brighter when it’s built by everyone.

will test next-gen laser communications in orbit. 🛰️🌏

Gilmour Space has partnered with Singapore- and US-based Transcelestial to integrate and test laser (optical) communications on ElaraSat , scheduled for a rideshare mission later this year.

𝟭. Laser communications can carry 10–100× more data per second than radio links, letting satellites deliver far more information back to Earth in less time. (They can be supported by networks of ground stations to manage local weather impacts.)
𝟮. Optical links are harder to intercept or jam, making them more secure than conventional satellite communications.
𝟯. Lasers don’t need radio spectrum licenses, helping ease congestion as more satellites go into orbit.

𝗚𝗡𝗦𝗦 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗨𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲 🛰️
Our team has completed a series of simulated rocket launches using a newly developed Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver, built to perform in extreme space and aerospace environments.

— powered by satellites in space — enables positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) for critical applications including aviation, emergency services, autonomous systems, and space.

Developed with our partners at UNSW Australian Centre for Space Engineering & Research, this high-performance GNSS receiver is designed to precisely track the position, velocity and trajectory of fast-moving rockets, satellites and jet aircraft.

Early results for this Australian Space Agency project are promising and will inform our next phase of testing! 🚀

Congratulations to Katherine Bennell-Pegg, 2026 Australian of the Year! 🇦🇺✨

Did you know?
♦️ Katherine is the first person to train as an astronaut under the Australian flag. She was selected from over 22,500 applicants for astronaut training with ESA - a reminder that Australian talent can compete and win on the world stage.

♦️Astronauts are the eyes, hands and voices of exploration — they help test technologies, conduct research that can’t be done from Earth, and inspire new perspectives. Katherine, a space engineer, is inspiring the next generation to pursue STEM skills that underpin future industries.

♦️As Katherine says it, “Space…plays a role in tackling real-world problems and developing new knowledge that can benefit our society, environment and science.” From satellites tracking climate and bushfires to connectivity and disaster response, space technologies deliver value we use every day.

👏 Keep inspiring us, Katherine!
And congratulations also to fellow Australians of the Year recipients, Professor Henry Brodaty and Nedd Brockmann!
