📝 Don’t know where to start with performance reviews?

Performance reviews are a formal evaluation process that usually occur on an annual or bi-annual basis.

The idea of a performance review is to assess the employee's overall performance during the review period so that a focussed discussion can take place about what is going well and what could be improved.

Performance reviews are helpful for all leaders/managers as they can be used to identify performance gaps, training and development needs, and open up communication lines in a structured and positive way. Plus, linking performance reviews to pay is a fair and transparent process of deciding what remuneration increase is appropriate for each employee.

So how do you start?
1. Paper-based
You can use a template developed in Word or Excel for example. We have a pre-made template for purchase, or members can obtain it from our portal for free.

2. Software
Using software to conduct performance review cycles is becoming increasingly popular, saving time and making the process easier.

// Public holidays //

Did you know that employers can request employees work on a public holiday, but the request has to be reasonable.

An employee can refuse a request to work if:
• the employee has reasonable grounds; or
• the request is unreasonable.

Factors that might be considered when determining whether a request is reasonable include the nature of the work, the employer's operational requirements, the employee's personal circumstances, and the amount of notice given.

Industryus HR's membership enables employers to call anytime for advice on these kinds of matters. Call 07 5655 4047 for a quote.

// Seven uses for Position Descriptions that make having them a no brainer //

PDs are vitally important. Employers should ensure they have an up to date version for every position in the organisation.

PD's don’t need to be elaborate documents to be useful - we are VERY big fans of simple PDs that contain useful information only.

Here are seven uses which highlight the importance of position descriptions in the workplace:
1. Clarifying expectations and role responsibilities;
2. Enhancing recruitment and selection processes;
If you don’t have position descriptions or think it might be time to review or update your current position descriptions, contact us on 07 5655 4047 to arrange a quote.
4. Facilitating professional development conversations;
5. Ensuring legal and regulatory compliance for certain roles;
6. Promoting clarity such that each person clearly understands how they fit; and
7. Job pay grading processes.

If you don’t have position descriptions or think it might be time to review or update your current position descriptions contact us on 07 5655 4047 to arrange a quote.

// Right to disconnect reminder//

From 26 August 2025, the right to disconnect laws will start applying to small business employers and their employees (businesses with fewer than 15 employees).

Employees will have the right to refuse to monitor, read or respond to contact (or attempted contact) outside their working hours, unless doing so is unreasonable.

// Vietnamese eateries that exploited migrant workers ordered to pay a whopping $802,000 //

The Federal Court has ordered Mr Mai back-pay $407,546 plus interest and superannuation owed to the 36 workers he underpaid as the operator of a ‘Mr Viet” restaurant in a food court outlet in Adelaide’s Chinatown precinct.

In addition, the Court imposed a $256,000 penalty against Mr Mai and a $130,000 penalty against his wife and manager of the “Mr Viet’ eateries for her involvement in the contraventions.

The penalties were imposed for a range of contraventions including:
• giving false records to Fair Work Inspectors,
• underpaying or not paying minimum rates, overtime, weekend and public holiday loading,
• failing to compensate employees for taking no meal breaks and
• employees being unreasonably required to spend their own money (forcing them to buy their bosses and other employees bubble tea).

The underpaid workers were mostly international students aged under 25 working in casual customer service, kitchen, and bar and waitstaff roles.

The Fair Work Ombudsman has filed 146 litigations against employers involving visa holder workers and secured nearly $23 million in penalties in cases that have included visa holder workers, in the last seven financial years (to June 2024).

Where are my employees?

Absenteeism at work occurs when an employee doesn’t turn up for work consistently over a period of time with little or no valid explanation.

Excessive absenteeism can have negative effects on productivity, team morale and overall work performance if left unchecked.

Absenteeism can stem from various factors including:
• illness and injury, including issues with mental health and coping mechanisms;
• personal or work stress;
• workplace bullying and harassment;
• workplace dissatisfaction and disengagement;
• poor work-life balance;
• family responsibilities;
• lack of job security;
• overwork or burn out; and
• organisational culture issues.

How can you reduce absenteeism?

We recommend seeking professional HR support to address absenteeism at the individual level, however, there are many root causes or enabling factors that can be addressed which will likely improve the situation, such as:

• having a clear attendance policy and ensuring it is followed;
• improving workplace communication;
• offering flexible work options;
• improving employee wellbeing;
• encouraging employee engagement with the workplace; and
• improving workplace culture.

If you are having issues with absenteeism and need support don't hesitate to get in touch. 📞
