On Tuesday of this week, I was invited for lunch by an old friend. Well, to be truthful, he was an employee many years ago but we re-connected recently and I now consider him a friend.
I employed him some 40+ years ago when he was a teenager. His father had called into my office and I asked if I could find his son something to do as he had been unable to find a job in the 18 months since leaving school.
What has this to do with anything business-wise, you may be asking? Ant had said that he thought of me often over all of these years and all of the many things that I had taught him he still used today.
I taught him to sell without selling. How to be a 'Good' salesperson and an effective one.
Many people dislike salespeople and I can understand why - many salespeople are only interested in selling something and they will lie and omit critical information to get another notch on their sales record.

WHAT IS THE MOST EFFECTIVE FORM OF ADVERTISING?

Advertising has changed almost beyond recognition over the last 30 years. Then it was simple as the choices were limited – Press, Radio, TV and Direct mail.

We still have these but add to those all forms of social media in all its variations and complexity: Funnels, Video, Referral, Podcasts, Blogging, Free gifts, Authority, Books, Associates and Affiliates, and on and on. How do you choose?

Some of the old adages still apply such as ‘it is cheaper to sell to an existing client than find a new one’. We would talk about Target Marketing and Scattergun Marketing – and these too still apply. How many ads do you have to place on Facebook before a client who may need/want what you have to offer is actually going to see it? You will have to spend more and more money in the hope that your ad is there at the exact time that your prospect is looking? This can cost tens of thousands of dollars.

Press ads and TV ads are the same. The prospect has to be watching or listening AND attentive when your ad is broadcast AND comes from your location AND has a need that you can satisfy? Press and magazines have their own challenges – and they can be costly – I checked today and a full page for one issue in a related field to my business was $3,700: One ad, one spot, one issue.

However, I was chatting to one of my clients and his product seems to be the perfect tool for many types of businesses and it is something that I had not recognised as a very effective and inexpensive Target Marketing tool.

Precise, effective, versatile and can be used daily in a number of ways to make sales, reduce downtime of make quiet times busy, increase the value of your business and all of these for the cost of one ad in one magazine for one issue.

UNI STUDENTS

‘It’s been four hard years to get my business degree and I am super qualified but I am finding it really difficult to get a job!

Seventeen interviews later and I still have not secured employment but I have gained some knowledge. I am realizing that I know a lot about business systems and structures but what I know nothing about is the franchise sector. I vaguely remember one four-hour overview at some time during my course but what was presented, I cannot recall.

And I have learned that there are 500,000 people in Australia employed in the franchise sector. That’s a lot of people and I am missing out on any good jobs as I don’t know the philosophy, the jargon, the history – nothing.

I could get a job in McDonald's cooking French fries but that would be such a waste of four years of studies. I have decided that I am going to invest a few more hundred dollars and do the online Enterprise 21 ‘All About Franchising’ Tutorials course.’

Still the same simple steps to business success.......

Every day there are 10+ emails in my inbox trying to sell me webinars, seminars, books, courses, mentoring and combinations of all these on how to be successful in business.
Business success rates vary according to the researcher. My research indicates that 82% of all new businesses fail in the first five years. Meaning only 18% are still operating (we can say successful for this exercise).
If these email-offerings were real and the could increase the success rate to 36% would this be a commendable result?
Think about it for a minute?
Twice as many hairdressing salons, mechanics, IT and graphic artists, dogwashes, fast food outlets and all the rest all scrapping a living from the same number of dollars. This is a very bleak picture.

Taking the leap from employment to self-employment is not to be taken lightheartedly. Statistics clearly show that your chances of survival, far less success, after five years is less than 20%. Or in other words that you will have an 80% chance of failure.
