Why do customers ask for ISO?
If you've ever been asked, "Are you ISO certified?", it can feel like your customer is just ticking a procurement box... Sometimes that's true.
More often, they're asking a much bigger question - Can we trust your business?
When a customer chooses a supplier, they're taking on risk, and want confidence that you'll deliver consistent quality, manage problems effectively and have systems in place that don't rely on one person knowing how everything works.
That's where ISO comes in...
An ISO-certified management system gives independent assurance that your business has established processes, manages risk and is committed to continual improvement. It doesn't guarantee perfection, but it does demonstrate that your organisation has a structured way of delivering consistent outcomes.
For many organisations, especially those operating in regulated industries or larger supply chains, that confidence matters. It helps reduce uncertainty and makes it easier to compare potential suppliers.
So, when a customer asks if you're ISO certified, try looking beyond the certificate itself. They're often asking whether your business has the systems and discipline to consistently deliver what you've promised.
That's a very different conversation.
Has ISO certification ever helped you win new business or meet a customer's requirements?
