MAGIC MINUTE // “Ever doggedly held on to something which has long had its day?

Well this is what happened with my infamous greeny-brown Magic Minute jacket that I’ve been wearing from the start.

When I first wore it 30 years ago this expensive jacket was in fashion and I’ve blindly hung on to it ever since.

I couldn’t see that it’d lost its sparkle and detracted from my stories.

It took a phone call from a concerned friend of mine to what everyone else had been telling me for ages!

Phillipa told me straight out, “The jacket’s drab colour and ill-fitting cut does nothing for you at all, and it’s well past its use-by date!”

There was no denying the truth in this, but I’d thought my life stories were enough to hold my viewers’ attention.

I now clearly see that precious Magic Minute seconds were being lost in people contemplating this daggy jacket!

My new attire has added a bit more sparkle to the whole thing!

So get rid of the ‘Same Old’ and change it to something new and refreshing!

MAGIC MINUTE // “They say a faint heart doesn’t win fair lady. And I know it’s true because I’ve experienced the painful shame of this myself.

I once knew a beautiful French girl in my drama class who was mad about me. I’ll call her Mimi.

But too afraid and shy, I did little to make anything happen and felt safer being the resident funny man.

Oh, I had a couple of coffees with her and an afternoon at the beach, but that was it. And I simply let my chance go by.

Five years later, I’d just stopped at the lights on my bright red Australia Post Vespa when a flash car pulled up alongside me.

My heart skipped a beat.

There, beside a guy in a business suit, was Mimi.

She didn’t look happy.

Lucky for me, my helmet hid my overwhelming shame of ‘what could have been’ sitting right there next to me.

Then the lights changed and yesterday’s dream vanished, never to return.

The good news is, after many lonely years, I’m now at peace with myself and have someone to share my life with.

MAGIC MINUTE // “You better lose some weight,” my doctor advised me.

The next day, I set off on a daily walk routine where I met Tom, a tall, slender 83-year-old friend of mine, and told him what I was doing.

To my amazement, he said, “I got rid of a third of my weight, about 20 kilos.”

“Gee, that’ll be like carrying a 10 kg bag of potatoes around with you under each arm!”

“Or 16 frozen chickens!” he added.

We both laughed at this.

I said, “But losing weight can be a really tough challenge.”

“No, it’s not! It’s easy,” he said. “You’ve just got to stick at it.”

The image of those 16 frozen chickens goaded me to keep moving and continue on my merry way.

Like anything we tackle in life, the secret is to be persistent and consistent to get the job done.

MAGIC MINUTE // Ever found yourself caught in a bout of uncontrollable laughter where you nearly choked?

Well, this day, me and my 12-year-old mate, Gary, retired to a patch of bushy scrub to savour our b***y of purple Angelina plums we’d just helped ourselves to from an overhanging tree.

As we greedily sank our teeth into them, we didn’t expect them to still be green and strongly asidic.

It was here that the laughing trouble took hold.

The astringent acid had fastened the hard plums to the shiny enamel of our teeth, both top and bottom, so we could neither open our mouths to free the plums, or breathe!

Convulsing with choking laughter at the sight of it all, we were now gasping for air!

All we could do was crawl away from each other to stop laughing, and desperately try to pry the plums free!

I would never have dreamed this could happen – but it certainly did!
