In 2021, only 10% of Australia’s lithium-ion battery waste was recycled.

While Australia’s battery recycling capability continues to develop, significant volumes of end-of-life batteries are still improperly discarded or stored. This creates safety and environmental risks. Lithium-ion batteries can retain energy after use and may ignite if damaged, punctured or short-circuited.

Managing these batteries is complex. Battery chemistries and cell configurations vary between manufacturers, and assessment, disassembly and processing require appropriate expertise, equipment and controlled conditions.

There is a big gap between production and effective management at the end of a battery's life. Without the right infrastructure, the material that makes lithium batteries valuable — cobalt, nickel, manganese, lithium itself — can be lost. Improper disposal can also contribute to fires and potential contamination of soil and waterways.
