One leadership lesson has stayed with our roundtable guests for years.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to leading people.

Too often, we invest significant time onboarding people into systems, processes, policies, and compliance requirements, yet spend very little time understanding the individual sitting in front of us.

What if, from the beginning, we asked questions such as:

• How do you prefer to receive feedback?
• What does a constructive or courageous conversation look like for you?
• How do you like your achievements to be recognised?
• What helps you feel supported when facing challenges?

These conversations create a foundation of trust, understanding, and mutual respect.

When difficult conversations inevitably arise, leaders can return to those earlier discussions and say:

*”When we first met, you shared that this approach works best for you. Let’s work through this together.”*

The focus shifts away from blame and towards collaboration.

Leadership is not simply about knowing what people do.

It is about understanding who they are.

In a world of increasing complexity, uncertainty, and change, that human connection may be one of the most valuable leadership skills we can develop.

What is one question you ask team members early in the relationship that helps you lead them more effectively?

Here is a sneak peak of a few strategies we covered in the podcast special going live June 18.

Michael Burgess spoke about the importance of leaders sharing their own experiences with self-doubt. When leaders are open about their struggles, it normalizes these feelings and helps others feel less alone.

Carmel Philippe emphasized treating mistakes not as setbacks, but as learning opportunities.

Imposter syndrome and self-doubt are incredibly common, even among the most accomplished leaders. In our discussion, guest Perry Elliott, a seasoned COO and GM, openly admitted to being a “self-doubter.”

The takeaway?

Confidence isn’t about never doubting yourself, it’s about learning to move forward despite those doubts, and supporting others to do the same.

Unlocking Potential Starts with Safety, Courage, and Conversation

Working with people to grow and develop them is something I take deeply to heart. This past week, I’ve heard a consistent message...people want to contribute more, to speak up, to stretch further at work and yet, many don’t feel psychologically safe to do so without fear of consequences. At the same time, leaders are navigating their own uncertainty, feeling frozen amid geopolitical shifts and the rapid rise of AI, unsure how to pivot or make the next call.

The more opportunities we create to learn about ourselves and each other, the better equipped we are to navigate and mitigate these challenges. These are two sides of the same reality, and the bridge between them lies in cultivating a true growth mindset and committing to open, high-quality communication. When we create environments where curiosity is welcomed, perspectives are heard, and decisions are made with courage and not fear, we unlock the potential on both sides.

There’s a common misconception that being a compassionate leader means avoiding difficult conversations. In our roundtable, we dismantled that idea. Holding people accountable and leading with compassion aren’t mutually exclusive, they are two sides of the same coin.

Perry Ielati shared a fantastic distinction: the difference between being “nice” and being “kind.”

Nice: Telling people what they want to hear to avoid discomfort.

Kind: Holding people accountable in a constructive way that helps them grow.

Carmel Philippe added a crucial layer: separate the person from the behaviour. You can be personal (by understanding their context) without getting personal (by attacking their character).

It’s about setting clear expectations and having the courage to address behaviours, not label people. This approach, exemplified by leaders like Jacinda Ardern, proves you can be both effective and empathetic.

A fascinating insight from our chat with Dr. Cathy Cavanaugh was her two guiding principles for leadership: care and learning.

Throughout a career that has spanned K-12 education, higher ed, and the private sector - including growing one team from 30 to 250 people, these two values have been her constant.

A learning mindset allows a leader to navigate threats like economic uncertainty not as obstacles, but as opportunities to position the team thoughtfully for the future. The leaders she most admires are those who stay on the cutting edge of their fields and bring their teams along with them, working together to solve problems.
