Simone headed to Mareeba last week to work with the Indigenous NB2 group. This group has been meeting regularly over the past five years under the able leadership of Ian Perkins. It was great to see so many new faces (along with some very familiar ones) at this meeting.

We spoke about financial and herd management and the information required to work out the performance of both. The groups then went on to work through what their ideal business looks like in 10 years time, and identify some things that will help them get there and what might hold them back.

Thanks to Tim and Kat from Think Digital Studios for capturing this process to kick start the development of a fit for purpose business plan.

Ian was in Western Queensland earlier this week for a meeting with the Longreach Production Group. The group had guest speakers on the wool and sheep meat market and on the practicalities of feeding sheep in extensive businesses.

Back in March, Ian and Harry presented papers at the Northern Beef Research Update Conference.

In his paper co-authored with Kieran McCosker, Ian examines the key drivers of profitability within north Australian beef breeding businesses. In the second paper, he and Harry look at how understanding herd performance requires clarity in classifications and how removing ambiguity can improve the accuracy of herd record keeping.
