Laguna || Grower of the Month

Laguna is a beautiful family-owned business run by the three De Bakker brothers: Ron, Frank, and Michel, together with their brother-in-law Chris Kester. Like many other family businesses in the Westland region, our roots - quite literally - lie in tomato cultivation. They chose not to follow the ongoing trend of large-scale expansion. Instead, they opted for specialization. They focus on growing a houseplant that is still relatively rare in the Netherlands: the Medinilla. In addition, they have become specialists in carnivorous plants and a select range of seasonal products.

There nursery is located in Wateringen, on the Middenzwet. Spread across two sites, we have ample space there: 4.5 hectares dedicated exclusively to Medinilla cultivation. For seasonal products, they use a separate location. They operate with a modern approach to cultivation. Through the use of lighting and climate control, they closely mimic natural conditions to bring the Medinilla into bloom at the right time. This enables them to supply year-round.

Harg & Roses is a modern potted rose nursery located in Vierpolders. In 2025, the company expanded its facilities, and since then it has been producing 7.5 million 10.5 cm Kordana potted roses per year on an area of 5 hectares.

Unique in its kind, Harg & Roses holds the exclusive rights for the Netherlands to the Kordana® potted rose series by Kordes, grown in a 10.5 cm pot. Unique in quality, thanks to the highest standards. And unique in development, through the application of the latest cultivation techniques and systems.

By pruning twice, Harg & Roses achieves beautifully full plants. Thanks to the renewed cutting robot, work is carried out quickly and efficiently, with more than 2,000 new plants planted per hour, the pace is high, but never at the expense of quality. On the contrary, the potted roses receive special treatment, all under uniform conditions. They shine daily under LED lighting, are kept warm in winter with energy screens that insulate the greenhouse, are protected by biological crop protection, and grow fuller thanks to growth-retarding techniques.

And the residual waste? That too is put to good use. All green waste from the first pruning is donated to Diergaarde Blijdorp, ensuring that none of this beautiful material goes to waste. A true win-win.
