The ground is absolutely bone-dry. Fortunately, Antony Redsell has irrigation in place, as there’s no rain in the long-term forecast.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Segal Ranch Announces Ramosa™
New Hop Variety Honors Veteran Breeder Martin Ramos

Yakima Valley, WA — March 5, 2026 — Segal Ranch is proud to announce the release of its newest hop variety, Ramosa™, named in honor of longtime hop breeder Martin Ramos, the
innovative mind behind the Segal Ranch hop breeding program and the originator of the Tangier hop. The name Ramosa™ is also derived from Latin and Spanish roots meaning ‘branch’ or ‘full of branches,’ a nod to both the hop’s genetic lineage and its expressive, branching aroma profile.

For 30 years, Ramos has been a driving force in hop development at Segal Ranch. Widely respected throughout the brewing community, he is known as “the Hop Whisperer,” a nickname
given to him by Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River Brewing Company.

Ramosa™ has undergone limited trial use with select brewery partners, yielding highly positive feedback. Alex Cordeiro, Beer Production Manager at Tree House Brewing Company, shared
his experience working with Ramosa:

“Ramosa™, formerly known as D55, is a hop variety we were eager to work with after first encountering it in whole-cone form at Segal Ranch in 2025. At the time, it immediately stood out with an aroma reminiscent of vibrant pineapple juice. Now used in pellet form, Ramosa™ retains that same juicy pineapple character, complemented by equally expressive notes of mango smoothie and background notes of freshly cut melon.”

Ramosa™ will be available directly through Segal Ranch, as well as through Hollingbery and Son,
NY Hop Guild, and—through international partners—Charles Faram in the UK and Canada.

About Segal Ranch
Segal Ranch is a third generation hop farm located in Washington’s Yakima Valley, dedicated to innovative hop breeding, sustainable farming practices, and producing exceptional hops for breweries worldwide. With decades of experience and a passion for agricultural excellence,
Segal Ranch continues to contribute groundbreaking hop varieties to the global brewing community.

FEEDBACK FOR FUTURE FLAVOR

We love hearing what breweries involved in hop development trials are creating with hops from the New Zealand Hops Bract Program! 🍻

A huge thank-you to Topsham Brewery for sharing their experience with NZ 106:
“So far, I've been really impressed with it. It has elements of savoury that I recognise from Riwaka, but also a sherbet-sweetness and a roundness similar to Superdelic™. Aroma-wise it feels a little like someone has made a Riwaka Radler with passionfruit juice - I personally really like it! Very punchy as well; we dry hopped to about 15g/L and it is singing even before it's fully conditioned.” JD – Topsham Brewery

What qualities do you look for in a next-gen hop?

How many grams per litre of dry-hopping creates those big juice DIPA flavours? What cereal should we use to create a self-stable haze? What are the correct additives and E-numbers that will give us the right hue to our teal coloured slush-puppy sour…? These questions are great but unless we dig deeper to unearth how we can grow our raw ingredients in unfavourable conditions, then perhaps synthetic-coloured beers are all we can look to in a dystopian future where smoothie-sours are the norm.

In this episode, Nick Law's Hopforward Podcast explores why agricultural research is imperative for the future of brewing. Specifically looking at hops, Nick hosts a round table discussion with Will Rogers from Charles Faram, Duncan Westbury – Dean of Land and Property Management at the Royal Agricultural University – and Scientific Researcher, Josh Brett to answer this question.
