Multi-tooth recession without a second surgical site.
In this clinical spotlight from Dr. Lucy Johnson, periodontist in Washington, DC, a patient presented with cold sensitivity and esthetic concerns caused by severe recession in the maxillary left quadrant.
Dr. Johnson used a tunnel approach with AlloDerm SELECT™ and coronal advancement to treat the multi-tooth span without requiring a palatal harvest. At four weeks, the treated sites showed 100% root coverage and a significant increase in tissue thickness. The patient reported minimal postoperative discomfort and complete resolution of tooth sensitivity.

The patient was free from periodontal disease, with probing depths of 1 to 3 mm and no bleeding on probing. Gingival recession ranged from 2 to 5 mm across the quadrant, with reduced but adequate keratinized tissue width. The exposed root surfaces were free of caries, with detectable CEJs and a notable step on teeth 12 and 13.
Radiographs showed mildly reduced bone levels of less than 1 to 2 mm, with no abnormal radiographic findings. The mucogingival defects were classified as Cairo RT2 and Pini Prato A+.
Treatment consisted of tunnel preparation throughout the quadrant, placement of AlloDerm SELECT and coronal advancement.
