Ahead of the World Town Planning Day conference planned for November 6th, 2026, the American Planning Association and their Global Planners Network Partners at the Canadian Institute of Planners have put out a call for session proposals.

Session proposals must be submitted to the American Planning Association by Monday, September 21st, 2026.

The Prairie Wild Team wants to wish everyone a happy Labour Day weekend!

Since 1894, Canadians have celebrated Labour Day on the first Monday of September. In some cities, Labour Day dates back even further, with records of celebrations occuring as early as 1882.

While the holiday is now mostly associated with taking time to enjoy the tail end of Summer, Labour Day has its origins in early labour movements in Canada and the United States of America and represented a celebration of the working-class and a time to advocate for workers’ rights and protections.

Labour Day parades and other events still continue to be held across the country, celebrating the contributions of the working-class in Canada and recognizing the importance of solidarity.

Today is International Overdose Awareness Day.

For 25 years, International Overdose Awareness Day has brought together a global community to raise awareness and take action in ending overdoses.

Today, we recognize the ongoing impacts that overdoses continue to have on people from all walks of life. An overdose does not only harm the individual, it creates a ripple effect felt by families, friends, and entire communities.

Thankfully, there is hope. Through accessible care, education, and supports, we can prevent overdose related harms, and hopefully avoid overdoses all together.

This week is Public Service Pride Week!

Public Service Pride Week celebrates a global movement of public servants committed to furthering 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusion. This year, the theme of Public Service Pride Week is “Everybody In!” highlighting the work we can do together to make public service an inclusive place for everyone.

Public Service Pride Week is also a time to recognize the history of exclusion within public service, and the work that has been, and continues to be, done to make sure that 2SLGBTQIA+ people have their voices heard and their contributions valued.

Founded in 2017 by Devon Plett, Makerspace is Saskatoon’s home for the creative community!

Located in Riversdale, Saskatoon Makerspace offers access to classes, tools, community, and over 10,000 square feet of space to its growing community of over 250 members. Whether you’re a seasoned maker looking for a place to create, or you’re just starting to explore new hobbies and passions, Makerspace provides people of all skill levels with the tools, training, and support they need to succeed.
Alongside their studio spaces, they host free public tours, monthly classes, and frequent community events like their Mend Repair Café, where volunteers help neighbours fix everyday items instead of sending them to the landfill.

Currently, the team at Saskatoon Makerspace is working on the development of their new Strategic Plan; a 5-year vision to guide Saskatoon Makerspace and its members into the future! Today we're highlighting Saskatoon Open Door Society!

With over 45 years of experience, Saskatoon Open Door Society (SODS) has been dedicated to supporting refugees and newcomers with integration, connection, and community building to help them feel at home here in Saskatoon. The SODS team uses an equitable and holistic approach to provide vital services and programming that help thousands of people every year, including employment coaching, language and life skills classes, settlement guidance, recreational programming for all ages, and much more.

With guidance from a collaborative project team which includes Prairie Wild, aodbt, PCL Construction, and other partners, SODS is developing the Welcome Place; a community focused project offering safe and stable affordable housing for newcomers, refugees, and other vulnerable individuals, alongside wraparound settlement services and existing SODS programs and services.

Whether you've just arrived or you're years into building your life here, SODS is a warm, reliable place to turn for connection and support.

Over the course of nearly 200 years, it is estimated that approximately 4200 Indigenous and African people were enslaved in Canada.

Today marks the day that the Slavery Abolition Act went into effect across the British Empire 192 years ago. While this laid a pathway to freeing enslaved peoples, for those in British North America, the Act resulted only in partial liberation, only freeing children under the age of six, whereas others were made to continue serving their former owners for four to six years as apprentices.

Canada's history of slavery is not something that many Canadians are aware of. The celebration of Emancipation Day on August 1st encourages us all to recognize this history, and to educate ourselves on the harms it caused, and continues to cause to this day.

July is Disability Pride Month!

Today, persons experiencing disability account for over 27% of all Canadians, and nearly 30% of all residents of Saskatchewan.

Living with a visible or invisible disability influences the way people experience the world, providing unique perspectives, strengths, and challenges. This month, is important to not only celebrate these differences, but to recognize them as the natural part of the human experience that they are, and acknowledge the valuable contributions that persons experiencing disabilities continue to make to our society and culture.

This month, and throughout the year, we practice awareness of the social and physical barriers that persons experience disabilities are made to face, and strive to find ways to make our communities, language, and culture more inclusive of everyone.
