Some of the most vulnerable groups - such as First Nations communities in northern Ontario - have experienced the worst losses. Preparing for emergencies like these means creating equitable benefit packages to support those who need it the most.

Forest fires and other climate-related emergencies can destroy people's homes and livelihoods in a matter of days - but the health, social and economic impacts of these events last much longer, well after the initial threat is over.

In our latest blog, we call for an equitable safety net to support those who are most vulnerable .

Released earlier this year, Toronto's first Mental Health Report Card revealed that children and youth were less likely to report good mental health and that almost half feel depressed about the future because of climate change.

This year's Youth Day theme: Different Contexts, Common Aspirations also notes the interconnected challenges youth face across the globe, including climate change. It is an opportunity for dialogue and collective responses.

If we think our response to uncertainty should be to build a stronger Canada, that should start by building a fairer Canada which looks after everyone.

"Under-natured" neighbourhoods are communities with limited tree canopy and green space, where concentrations of concrete intensify the urban heat island effect. These neighbourhoods are also more likely to be home to people living in high-rise buildings with inadequate insulation or without air conditioning, many of whom are low-income and racialized. As a result, these communities face greater exposure to extreme heat, exacerbating the risk of both physical and mental health harms.

Research underway:

There's no age limit to homelessness:
In 2024, 15% of shelter users were 55 or older, and half were experiencing homelessness for the first time. Older adults seeking shelter services have high rates and much earlier onset of age-related health conditions, which shelters were not designed or resourced to accomodate. Our upcoming research explores shelter use among older adults in Toronto to shine a light on their service needs and make recommendations on how to improve shelter systems to better support them.
